George ALSING Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - George L. Alsing, 71, died suddenly Tuesday, April 27, 2010
A resident of Williamsburg since 1978, George was a native of Phoebus, Va. Born on the same day that Joe Louis, "the Brown Bomber," knocked out Max Schmeling for the world heavyweight title, he enjoyed telling people that because the town doctor was at the fight. George was delivered by the coroner and the wife of the town undertaker, who was a nurse.
George was a proud Hampton Krabba and loved getting together with his friends and classmates for good times and raucous storytelling. He was in the car business in Williamsburg for 32 years. Selling cars was his passion and he excelled at it. He never met a person to whom he didn't try to sell a car, and made many lasting friendships as a result.
He also loved boating and enjoyed many happy times on the Happy Hour out of Marina Cove Yacht Basin with his best buddy, Capt. Bobby Elliott, and friends, and later on his own boat, Legacy. Those hot sunny days were some of the happiest of his life.
Preceded in death by his parents and a sister, he is survived by his wife of 29 years, Susan Myers Alsing; sons, Erick Alsing of Allen, Texas, and Kristoffer Alsing of Hampton, Va.; and sister, Matilda "Boots" Galli of Galveston, Texas. "Uncle Peaches" also leaves behind his niece, Trudy Atkins, of Houston, Texas; and nephew, Kenneth Irwin, of Porter, Texas; and a number of cousins, among them Betty Styles, of Wilsons, Va. He also leaves behind many friends he felt honored to have, including Don Pace, John Salem, Joe Sheppard, Skeeter DeBlasio, Jerry Sharf, and Tommy Smith. He also leaves behind the staff of Holiday Cadillac – a most special group of caring people.
A celebration of George's life is being planned for a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his honor may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society. Arrangements entrusted to Nelsen Funeral Home. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Dear Suzie
I do believe I did meet you once a long while back. My memory of George was that he always gave Chris Newell and me extra fries when he worked at the yacht club on Ft. Monroe. We were just kids and he was always so sweet to us giving us extra treats. I remember with such fondness. He was such a good friend to Mom and Dad for so many years. You have my deepest condolences.

We remember George from his days at Ken Houtz Chevy in Gloucester. We enjoyed boating and we exchanged many stories of our days on the water. He sold us several vehicles while there and we have fond memories of him. We saw him Christmas while shopping in Williamsburg and it was a good reunion. So sorry for your loss and we extend our deepest sympathy to the family. Ginger & EJ Rowe

My Dear Friend Susan: Words cannot express my deep sorrow for you when I learned of George's passing. As I walked in the bright Florida sunshine this morning, I remembered the cold winter mornings that he waited for you (car motor running) to arrive in the CW parking lot to give you a ride a few short blocks to the Goodwin Building. He always offered, and I accepted the warmth of car, smile and conversation of those early winter mornings. Such a gentleman and kind person that George! He will be missed, but remembered for his kindness.

Susan, I was shocked to hear of George's sudden death. He was a good friend since he hired me to work at Patriot in 1982 when I'd just retired from the Air Force, we're about the same age. I'll try to attend the memorial.

Susan, I'm truly sorry to hear this sad news about George, but I'm glad I was able to see you both only a few months ago. I shall always remember him for the wonderful burgers he made for us when he worked at the OPCYC and his friendship with my parents, Jim and Lois Bluhm. George was a wonderful man and I know he'll be missed.

My wife, Jeannette, joins me in my sorrow in losing a good friend of many years. If there is anything we can do, please, please let us know.

Susan:
George was my friend since 1972 when we both were at Fort Monroe. Our paths crossed again when I retired from the Army and Alice and I settled in Williamsburg. I'll miss him and our chats about the good old days and all the folks at Monroe. He could always get a smile or a laugh out of me with his dry humor. He was truly one of the "good guys" and was taken from us much too soon. May God bless him, and may God bless and comfort you in your time of grief and loss. If Alice and I can help in any way, please don't hesitate to call on us.
