Gola DAVIS Obituary
Gola was born May 1, 1935, in Norfolk, Va., to the late William and Menelia Crawley, but was raised in Halifax, N.C., by her maternal grandmother, Mary E. Harvey. In 1950, Gola returned to the Peninsula where she met and married the late James Davis Jr. From that union, they had two daughters.
She was a dedicated employee of Hampton University, where she retired after 24 years of services. She was a faithful member of Gethsemane Baptist Church where she served in the Nursing and Samaritan's Ministry.
Gola was preceded in death by her husband, James Davis Jr.; her granddaughter, Norvease 'Stuff' Davis.
She leaves to cherish her memories, daughters, Laura A. Davis, Aravia D. Johnson (Abdullah), and Felecia D. Jones; devoted granddaughter, Lavonia D. Davis (James); granddaughters, Ravenna C. Johnson and FeLarrisha DeBrew; great-granddaughter, Armone N. Davis; sisters-in-law, Bessie Adkins and Alberta Davis; brother-in-law, Rudolph Davis (Ruth); devoted cousin, Eloise Jefferson; lifelong friend, Bernice Highsmith; K-9 companion, Smoke; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Viewing will be held noon to 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8, 2010, at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel, 1601-27th St., Newport News, VA 23607. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, at Gethsemane Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Dwight Reddick officiating. Interment will follow at Hampton Memorial Gardens. I am so sorry to hear of "Ms Gola" as I always called her. She always had a smile and a big hug for you. She was a true Samarritan. She loved GOD, doing for everyone and her church. Ms Gola was was so full of life, love and wisdom. When I'd see her she would share it and nod and say "ok now". To the family I love you, and my prayers go out to you and yours. Keep that big smile going as "Ms Gola" did.
