Harry ASHE Obituary

GLOUCESTER - Harry T. Ashe Jr., 90, died Dec. 6, 2010, at his home.
Harry was a very active member of Gloucester Point Baptist Church for 50 years and the Men's Bible Class. He was one of the founders of the Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue. Harry retired from Cheatham Annex in 1972, and along with his wife working beside him everyday they have operated Ashe's Nursery for more than 55 years. Harry's green thumb and expertise in plants and flowers have been the delight of many homes and special occasions over the past years. He was a simple soft spoken man with high moral values who enjoyed music, especially bluegrass and a good conversation. He was a good friend and a man of honesty and integrity. He will be dearly missed, but will remain in our hearts forever.
His mother, Flossie Williams Ashe; father, Harry T. Ashe Sr.; and brother, William Rowe preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Catherine Belvin Ashe; son, Thomas Ashe and wife, Paulette; granddaughter, Melissa Ashe; grandson, Ryan Ashe and wife, Amy; great-grandchild, Alex Insley; as well as a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services officiated by the Rev. Ray Goude Jr. and Dr. Paul Garber will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Gloucester Point Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Gloucester Point Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.
The family would like to thank Frances Jenkins for her loving care, kindness and support she has given to Harry and his family.
In Harry's memory contributions may be given to: Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue, P. O. Box 9, Bena, VA 23018 or Gloucester Point Baptist Church, P. O. Box 305, Gloucester Point, VA 23062. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Hello, I've worked with the amazing Melissa for many years now.
I'm sorry for your sadness and missing him, especially during this season. My belief is that we need not worry about him, but I do hope that your family's grief is offset by warm stories and gatherings filled with laughter, as his parting gift! God bless you all.

Many years ago, 36 or so, Harry and Catherine use to drive the rescue squad, I was in a Body Cast and had to come home from the hospital and go back to the doctor in that rescue squad. The day the cast came off, they stopped by Hardee's in Grafton and bought me lunch, I will never forget their kindness and there was not an Azelea around my house that didn't come from their nursery. God bless both and my heart and prayers go with Harry and stay here with Catherine.

Tommy and Family,
I am sorry to hear abou you Dad. He reminded me so much of my Dad. The great stories, compassionate words for others, subtle jokes, all characterized who he was. I really enjoyed talking to him. He will be missed by everyone that know him.
