Henry WYATT Obituary

HAMPTON - Henry James 'Pop' Wyatt Jr. went home to be with the Lord at the age of 86. Pop fought a long battle with cancer and was resting at home when he passed away Sept. 28, 2010.
Born in Sullivan County, Tenn., he was a resident of Hampton since 1933. Pop was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Anne Wyatt; and brothers, Frank and Ralph Wyatt.
Pop graduated from Newport News High in 1942 before going into the Navy. He was with the 'underwater demolition squad' until receiving an honorable discharge because of injuries received. During his time in the Navy he took up boxing, once going three rounds with Champion Rocky Garciano.
Pop had many hobbies including fishing, hunting, and playing cards. But his main hobby was auto racing. Pop started his career at Dude Ranch now known as Langley Speedway. He was credited with winning the first sportsman race at the track. Later in his career he raced the 'Flying Mile' at Daytona, averaging 142 mph in a 1963 Pontiac. Pop ran many tracks up and down the east coast winning his share of races. Later Pop would turn his efforts towards helping his son, grandsons, and great-grandsons race. From 1995 to 2002, Pop helped with the major reconstruction of Langley Speedway where he developed many valuable friendships and left a major impact on all.
In 2009 he joined First Baptist Church where he accepted Christ as his Savior and was baptized. Pop made many friends while attending church there.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Lorraine Wyatt. Between he and his wife they have four children who also survive, Wayne Wyatt and his wife, Shannon, Teresa Miller and her husband, Larry, Kathy Riemann, and William Smith and his wife, Sherrie. He also has 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1, 2010, at First Baptist Church, 12716 Warwick Blvd., Newport News. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 3, 2010, at First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.

Everytime I think of Pop I think of his layed back style and how everything, even when it wasn't, seemed under control. He always taught me the value in everything we do in life. To push hard at what we want to achieve and we will get it. He himself has achieved alot and I can only wish that I do half of the things he did. He was a Husband, a Father, a Grandfather, a Great Grandfather, a Step Father, and the list goes on just to show how completely unselfish he was with his life. He was constantly giving and hardly recieving. With everythin i got Pop i miss you and I LOVE YOU! RIP

Tribute to a Friend
He will live in the hearts of the friends he made
and be know always for the foundation he laid,
Because Goodness and Fairness never die-
they go shining on like the sun in the sky,
Just as Honor and Truth endure forever,
Death is powerless to destroy or to sever..
So his gallant soul has taken flight
into a land where there is no night,
He is not dead,he has only gone on to a brighter, more wonderful dawn.

Dear Grandpa- God has called a precious angel home, you. My heart is broken in so many pieces. I keep telling myself that you are in a better place and not in pain. But it still hurts. I'm glad I got to tell you I Love You one more time, I'm glad I got to kiss you goodnight- but I didn't get to say goodbye. I didn't want to say goodbye. So with a very heavy heart I want to thank you for being my only grandpa. I want to thank you for your only son- my dad. In you, this world got two of the most fantastic angels. The Wyatt family is your legacy and I think you know that you got it so right! That being said, I will not say good-bye, but say see you later. Because with Gods help, we will see each other again and we will hold each other and you will say to me as you always have- "I Love You Sweetheart." RIP my precious angel. Love Always, Your Grandaughter
