Homer Sanderson Obituary

HAMPTON - Homer J. Sanderson, 96, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009.
He was a native of Hallsville, N.C., and had been a Hampton resident for 53 years.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Fox Hill, and also a member of the Monitor Masonic Lodge #197, AF & AM. During the 1930's, he served with the U.S. Navy with the USS Ranger Carrier Group. After a 20 year career with the Newport News Ship Yard, he retired as an electronics technician in 1977. After his retirement, he enjoyed researching his family's genealogy and exploring his heritage. One of his hobbies included building Grandfather clocks.
Surviving members of his family include his wife of 63 years, Rebekah T. Sanderson; children, Cynthia S. Wright, Pam S. Duncan and husband, Doug, and Elwin H. Sanderson and wife, Andrea; grandchildren, Leighann Morzano, Shelley Gilbert, Christopher L. Nolen, and Blaine W. Duncan; great-grandchildren, Zachery Morzano, Angelina Morzano; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends, Monday evening, Nov. 16, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Parklawn- Wood Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday morning, Nov. 17, 2009, at 11 a.m., at First United Methodist Church of Fox Hill with the Rev. Cheryl Simmons presiding. Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the First United Methodist Church of Fox Hill, Building Fund, 1 Salt Pond Road, Hampton, VA 23664 or to Muscular Dystrophy Association, Multiple Sclerosis Society, or the American Cancer Society.
