RED OAK, N.C. - Jack Linwood Windley Jr., 78, died Wednesday, April 7, 2010, in Red Oak, N.C., of natural causes.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Elaine Carawan Windley; sons, Linwood Pharr "Woody" Windley (Kate) of Roanoke, Lance Eugene Windley (Jennifer) of Raleigh, N.C.; and daughter, Jackie Windley Leonard of Red Oak, N.C.; and grandchildren, Brooke and Tara Windley, Jake and Luke Leonard, and Grayson and Seren Windley. Jack is also survived by brothers, Richard E. "Gene" Windley (Pam) of Gloucester, Oliver P. "Buddy" Matthews of Florence, Ala.; and one sister, Janie Matthews Garrett (Frank), of Orlando, Fla.; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack L. Windley Sr. and Ruby Harrison Matthews; and by a daughter, Peggy Denise Windley.
Jack was born in Swan Quarter, N.C., on May 18, 1931, and moved to Newport News in the 1940's. He graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery, Ala., and served two years in the National Guard during the Korean War. After returning home, he graduated from East Carolina University in 1957. Jack worked for N.C. Vocational Rehabilitation for one year before moving to Virginia in 1958 where he worked for the Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services until his retirement in 1991.
Jack was an avid animal lover and sports enthusiast. Although he had many different kinds of pets, including birds, cats, dogs, and hamsters, he dearly loved his Beagles and Chesapeake Bay Retrievers.

Jack loved playing golf in his spare time with his golf buddies and was a lifelong motorcycle enthusiast. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
