James MATTHEWS Obituary

KILL DEVIL HILL, N.C. - James Clyde "Jimmy" Matthews passed away at his home in Kill Devil Hill, N.C., on Tuesday Oct. 12, 2010 after a lengthy illness.
Jimmy was 76 and a native of Hilton Village in Newport News. Jimmy said recently, one of his most wonderful memories in life was growing up in Hilton Village.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Louise Matthews; and brothers, Thomas and Neff Matthews.
He is survived by his sister, Judy Matthews Talbert (John) of Newport News; brother, George F. Matthews of West Point, Va.; sisters-in-law, Beatrice Matthews and Barbara Matthews; 13 nieces and nephews; and many special friends.
Jimmy attended Warwick High School and left school early to join the U.S. Air Force, obtaining a GED Certificate and other awards while serving in the Air Force. After his service, he completed the Apprentice School at NASA and was employed at NASA for a number of years. He was also employed in the construction and service areas during his later years.
The family thanks George F. Matthews and nephew, Thomas C. Matthews, for the help they provided in the past; and to special nephew, Tommy Matthews, for his care and support of Jimmy for the past 20 years.

May your memories bring you comfort in this time of sorrow. I too grew up in Hilton and attended Hilton Elementary and Warwick High schools with Jimmy, Neff, and Barbara. Also, find comfort that Hilton was truly a wonderful place to spend one's childhood.
