James LOCKHART Obituary

HAMPTON - James Julian Lockhart was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, April 17, 2010, after a short illness. He was the second of five children.
Jim was joined in holy matrimony to Ruby Lee Jackson on Nov. 4, 1950. Ruby preceded Jim in death in 1988.
Jim was a pilot and flight instructor, and served in the military for more than 20 years. His final rank was that of Chief Warrant Officer. Following Jim's military career, he was employed as a Quality Assurance Manager with Pressure Systems, Inc., in Hampton, Va.
Jim was a longtime member of Union Baptist Church, where he was head of the Deacon Board for 12 years. He later joined St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church, where he served as Junior Warden before he was elected as Senior Warden. Jim was a licensed Eucharist Minister and Lay Reader/Chalice Bearer.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 23, 2010, at St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Carter Funeral, Inc., 251 Richneck Road, Newport News, VA 23608, Phone: 757-872-6696. Burial will follow at Hampton National Cemetery with Full Military Honors.

My heart was saddened when I learned about the passing of Jim. I remember Jim from Zem Temple in Hampton when I visited functions sponosred by the Temple and the Daughers of Isis. Jim was a wonderful person with a great personality. My condolences to the family. Jim will be missed.

I first met Jim in 1959 when over 125 Army helicopters were at Fort Bragg, N
C., for a AUSA demonstration. We became good friends from that time until now. Our wives, both deceased, were good friends also. He will be always remembered.

I met Jim just a few months ago at the BX on Langley Air Force Base. I recently received my Pilots License and Jim spent time sharing and encouraging me in my new found hobby. He even offered to take me up and show me a few things. I will really miss him.

I Flew with Jim Lockhart many times between 1960 and 1975. We went to the South Pole together in 1964, where he saved the life of at least one mountain climber. ( see LIFE magazine 7 November 1964. He is the unlisted pilot)

The retired military has lost another truely great person.
