James Whyte Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - James P. 'Jim' Whyte, 85, died Sunday, Jan. 7 at Sentara Hospital. Jim moved to Williamsburg from Oklahoma in 1958 to work at the Marshall Wythe School of Law at the College of Williams and Mary. As a Law Professor, he taught criminal and labor law and eventually served as Dean of the Law School in the early 1970s. Upon retirement, he helped solve labor disputes as an Arbitrator and enjoyed a competitive round of golf. Jim graduated from Bucknell University in 1943 and then served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on a minesweeper in the South Pacific. After the war, he earned a Master's degree from Syracuse University and attended law school at the University of Colorado. He was active in several local organizations, including the St. Andrews Society, the Navy Reserve, and was past President of the Williamsburg Community Center. Mr. Whyte is survived by his wife, Martha; three sons, James, Ward and Scott and several grandchildren. Most of the family still resides in the Williamsburg area. Bucktrout of Williamsburg is in charge of the arrangements.
