HAMPTON - James Ray Bowen, age 75, passed away on January 24, 2014 with his family by his side. He was a native of North Carolina and had been a peninsula resident for 52 years. James retired from Newport News Shipbuilding, Dept. 038/ Nuclear Pipe X-ray after 38 years of service. He attended New Hope Pentecostal Holiness Church and was a U S Army Veteran. His grandchildren were the love of his life. He was also an avid Tarheels fan. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 53 years, Janice Bowen; his two sons, James Bryan "JB" Bowen and Jeffrey Todd Bowen, both of Hampton; one brother, Donald H. Bowen and his wife Nadine, of Greenville, NC; four grandchildren, Stephanie Renee Creech, Taylor Nicole Bowen, Megan Alexandra Bowen and Brandon Ray Bowen, and one great-grandson, Clay Aaron Creech, all of Hampton. He was preceded in death by his mother, Alice Bowen Hill; and a sister, Linda Carol Owens. The family would like to especially thank his daughter-in-law, Patricia Ann Bowen for her love, care and support during this time. The family will greet friends Tuesday, January 28, 2014 from 5 to 6 PM in W.J. Smith & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow immediately at 6 PM in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Larry Jones officiating. Burial will be in Whitehead Cemetery, Hampton, TN after a funeral service in Memorial Funeral Home on Thursday, January 30, 2014.
