Jeanie Strachan Obituary

APPOMATTOX - Jeanie Mae Stutts Strachan, 84, passed away on Nov. 1, 2009 in Appomattox, Va.
She was born on Aug. 5, 1925, in Washington, D.C. Her family moved shortly thereafter to Virginia, settling in the Phoebus area of Hampton on Hope Street. She worked in the Five & Dime in Phoebus and attended Hampton High School, where she met her future husband. Jim and Jeanie were married Oct 15, 1945, and settled in Hampton.
Jeanie was a devoted wife and wonderful mother to her three sons. She moved to Appomattox County after her husband's retirement in 1985. Although she enjoyed traveling, she loved coming home to their place out in the country. Jeanie and Jim used to take the boys camping up there for many years, long before a house was ever built on the property. Jeanie certainly appreciated a good joke. She enjoyed all the jokes the family sent her through the years and always took them with her to share with folks everywhere she went. She took great enjoyment in feeding all her birds, especially the hummingbirds that came back every year.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Leonis Stutts; stepfather, Sam Copeland; brother and sister-in-law, Roy and Margaret Stutts; sister-in-law, Shirley Stutts; grandparents, John and Margaret Mallicott and Leroy Stutts.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, James W. Strachan; three sons, James W. Strachan Jr. (Lorie), Eddie Strachan (Debbie), Johnny Strachan (Patty); two brothers, Richard Stutts, Benny Copeland (Mary); one uncle, Frank Mallicott; six grandchildren, Todd McCoy, Tommy Strachan, Amy Smith, Amanda Strachan, Jessica Barnick, Jeannie Strachan; six great-grandchildren, Devon Smith, Elijah Strachan, Alexis Strachan, Esther Barnick, Collin McCoy, Forrest McCoy; eight nieces and nephews, Ben Copeland, Charlotte Dillow, Roy Stutts Jr., Gerry Stutts, Bobby Stutts, Richard Lee, John Stutts, David Stutts.
There will be a funeral service at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov 5, 2009, at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 N. Armistead Ave., Hampton, with interment following at Parklawn Memorial Park. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Jim, Ben, and Richard

I was saddened to hear of Jeanne's passing. She opened her home to me on many occasions and I found her to be warm, joyful person who was great to be around. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Jim & family,

We are so sorry for your loss. You had Jeanie for a good long lifetime. Wish she could have been with us all a lot longer. We loved her and appreciated her. She was a beautiful person and strong woman. Never complained and always welcomed everyone into her home with love and a fun time. A wonderful sister and second Mom to our Charlotte & Ben.

We are deeply sadden to learn of the passing of Jeanie. Ben loved to go to her house and hunt and always spoke of her very highly. One reminiscense he spoke of was the hundreds of humming birds she would feed and then of couse there is the bear in the peach. She will be sadly missed.
