Jeffrey BASS Obituary

YORKTOWN - Dr. Jeffrey Wayne Bass, 58, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2010.
Jeff was a native of Knoxville, Tenn., and a Yorktown resident since 1979. He was a 1970 graduate of Central High School, Knoxville, Tenn. He also graduated from the University Tennessee, Knoxville in 1973 and the University Tennessee Center Health Sciences Dental School in 1977. He opened his dental practice in Grafton in 1979 and retired in January of 2010.
Jeff had a passionate love for God's creation, which included fossils, shells, rocks, minerals and flowers. The compassionate, gentle dental care that he provided for 30 years in York County provided many personal friends. He could talk to anyone at any time and make them feel at ease in the dental chair or in any casual conversation. He loved fishing, hunting, crabbing, exploring for fossils and gardening.
Jeff was preceded in death by a son, Alex Bass.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Louise M. Bass; a son, Brent Bass; three daughters, Sydney Lester and her husband, Andrew of Richmond, Lauren Bass of Norfolk, Hannah Bass of Yorktown; his mother, Evelyn Bass of Knoxville, Tenn.; and a brother, Michael Bass of Jonesborough, Tenn.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11, 2010, at Peninsula community Chapel with the Rev. Tom Kenney officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Peninsula Community Chapel Building Fund e321, 4209 Big Bethel Road, Yorktown, VA 23693.

I ,too, was a patient of Jeff Bass... we're the same age and started our careers at the same time in York Co. I taught school at Tabb Elem. he initiated a school program for young kids about dental care. We jointly shared our ideals about children and how happy we were to be a part of the education of our youths. Over the years he remained as my dentist, I continued to admire him, not only as the dentist that provided me a beautiful smile( other dentists always commented on my lovely dental work), BUT as the human being that could connect with my spirit and offer innocent and noninvasive advise to a person who needed a special message about life and order. He was genuine and polite and a dear soul I'll never forget. God bless his loving wife and children... I'm glad I knew your beloved husband and father. Carol Woolard Huffman

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to Louise and Jeff's family. I went to high school with Jeff and Louise and am not surprised at all to see all the wonderful memories that people have of him. He was a gentleman even as a young man with a compassionate heart and charming winsome personality. Those who knew him were blessed and I am honored to have had him (and Louise) in my life.

I was a patient of Dr. Bass in the late 1980's /early 1990's. Best dentist I ever had! No problems with his work - even after 20 years. Several times other dental workers have complimented my dental work and asked who did it. He was always interesting to talk to, even with all the dental equipment in my mouth!

He died way too young. May God bring comfort and a multitude of blessings to his family.

October 11, 2010

Dearest Louise,
I can't begin to tell you how stunned I was when I opened my Sunday paper and saw that Jeff had departed this life. It stunned me so much that It took my breath away. Although we had sort of drifted apart these past few years, Jeff was always my friend in my heart and one of the finest men I ever met in my life.
I remember 1 time when we were on a men's retreat together, Jeff decided that we should go canoeing. I got in the canoe first and then he got in and promptly dumped us in the river. We both came up sputtering and spitting water and laughing like a couple of morons. I loved his thick Tennesee drawl: I was not Dan, but Da-yan! There were no single syllable words to Jeff! On behalf of Lynnette and myself, please accept our sincerest love and gratitude for having the privilege of knowing the Bass family.
The Lord Bless you and keep you in your time of sorrow.

Louise and kids - I know your grief may be hard to bear at times but please be comforted in knowing your Dad's no longer suffering from pain and is with the Lord. You can also be comforted by the comments from so many friends, neighbors and patients that loved your Dad so much and were touched by his sense of humor and caring heart. We've only known you guys for a few years but truly feel blessed to be part of such a great family. I was strengthened by the great outpouring of love I saw at the hospital from your church, friends and neighbors, what a blessing they are.
Please know that we're praying for you and look forward to growing closer to you.

Louise, I am so sad to hear about Jeff's passing. Even though I have not seen either of you in over 30 years, Jeff is always the person that comes to mind when I remember our days at Central. To Louise and family,
We are deeply saddened to hear of Jeff's passing and want to say that he will be missed by many people. I saw him in my store a couple of weeks ago and was able to catch up on how the family was doing. I was grateful I just happened to be walking down the aisle and run into him. As a phamacist I was able to talk to him frequently on the phone since his practice was right next to mine. He enjoyed talking about family, swim team and his hobbies. Robyn and I will miss him and we pray for you and your family in this sad time. God Bless.

Louise, Evelyn and family. I was so sad to hear of Jeff's passing. He and I were in the 1st grade through high school together. We were at each other homes most weeks, while we were attending Norwood Elementary. The last time I saw him was just before his marriage to Louise. I hate that our lives and paths didn't pass again. From the obit and the condolences I read, it is evident that he became a wonderful dentist, husband, father and man. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
