Joe MASSENBURG Obituary

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Joe Massenburg Jr. died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010, at Oak Forest Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Born in Nash County, N.C., Aug. 25, 1938, to Joe and Alice Massenburg he was the oldest son of 12 children. He was more than a brother often serving as a caregiver for his younger siblings. A role he cherished and thrived in. Joe was a hardworking man who enjoyed success throughout his life with career exploits in Auto Body Repair and Truck Driving along with a brief stint in the U.S. Army.
He was a generous man who loved his children dearly, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed simple pleasures like sitting in the park or rides with his grandchildren. You could tell with any conversation you had with him that his love for his grandchildren ranked as a highest priority. He did not hesitate to share any of his children's or grandchildren's successes with anyone who would listen.
He was fond of snow and cold weather and even dreamed of moving to Colorado where he could enjoy the view of endless snow covered landscapes (even though getting him to dress appropriately for the weather was nothing short of pulling teeth).
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Alice Massenburg of Nashville, N.C.; his daughter, Lois Gene Massenburg; son, Alvin Massenburg; and his brothers, Therman Massenburg Sr., and James Arthur Massenburg.
He leaves to cherish his memories seven children, Samuel Massenburg (Connie), Doris Gene Thomas, James Massenburg (Robin), Jeanette Wilson (Alvin), Evelyn McDew (Darren), Anthony Massenburg (Janine) and Christopher Massenburg (Cassandra); brothers, Wilbert Massenburg of Yorktown, Va., Herbert Massenburg of Hampton, Va., and Sorell Massenburg of Rocky Mount, N.C.; sisters, Evelyn Barnhill of Jamaica, N.Y., Amy Everette of Sufolk, Va., Minnie Silver of Nashville, N.C., Mae Bell Lewis of Nashville, N.C., Ann Sumner of Rocky Mount, N.C., and Brinda Greenwood of High Point, N.C.; 23 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephew, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010, at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Salisbury National Cemetery, Salisbury, N.C. The family visitation will be held from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Dearest Mom, Jean, Sam, Poochie, Jeannette, Kay, Peter, & Linda.

I am sorry to hear about the passing of Mr. Joe. I only met him once but at that time he was a very pleasant and personable man. I always wondered who Sam Sr. and Maurice looked like and I finally had the opportunity to see where they received there handsome looks. I do know and understand the sorrow you all are feeling at this time but it does get better and the LORD really does heal us. I am sorry that I will not be there but you all know that I love each of you and I will keep the family in my prayers daily. Remember earth has no sorrow that GOD alone can not heal. He is there with each of you and he knows just what you need when you need it, God bless you Massenburg family.
