Grandaddy,
I was talking to grandmother before we left for the viewing last night. I told her "Do you realize how many people are going to show up tonight?" She replied "Alot im sure, but not that many because it's right after the Thanksgiving Holiday." I told her you have got to be kidding me right? So we got there and of course by the end of the night when we left it was a couple hundred people who had come to pay their respects, and of course the line was out the door waiting to see you. You always did like to be the center of attention! You could light up a room the minute you walked into it. Your smiling face could definitely turn someones day from bad to awesome! You never went away mad, and you made everyone smile even if they had a bad day.
Today at the funeral again you had so many people attend. I knew they would all come to pay their respects because you were always the type of guy everyone wanted to be around. As the eulogies continued with different people speaking about you, they always had to repeat one of your jokes! I can think up so many things i will always tell people that you have told me over the years. "Are you married or happy?" and people would mostly reply "Both" and you of course would shoot back at them and say "Your lying like a dog!!"
Life will never ever , ever, ever, be the same without you. You have and always be an inspiration to me. You loved me from the moment you laid eyes on me. You have been with me for my entire 30 years. I can't imagine going forward in life without you by my side. I can't imagine grandmother doing anything without you either. It doesn't even feel right to go to the house without you being in the den in your lazy boy watching either mash reruns or either your john wayne tapes. I know probably right now your in heaven eating cracker barrell with God and with John Wayne telling him how much you loved him as an actor! I know your having the time of your life and especially not having any pain. I bet your running around up there!
Know that you are always with us in our hearts forever, and not a minute will go by that you are not on our minds. Riley keeps asking if you can wake up and watch dora or sponge bob with her. She doesn't understand but she keeps saying how she loves you so much and that she is your PT as you always called her. (pretty thing)
I love you so much and miss you so much, my heart will one day be put back together when i get to be with you again in heaven. Until then sweet grandfather bye but not goodbye.
Love always,
your favorite grandaughter

I was so sorry to hear about John and your loss. We worked in the same Division (IRD) from when I came to NASA in 1959 until he retired in 1979. He was always a joy to work with, and it was heartening to see that his Memorial Service was joyful with music and memories.

Dear Aunt Catherine, Brenda, Amber, Nathan and family, I am truly so sorry for your loss. He was such a great man. I loved to hear Uncle John sing, I loved to hear him laugh. I will miss running into him while he was out running errands...I will always remember his humor and his love of family. I was only 16 when I became a part of your family and I have a lifetime of memories and love to hold on to. I know I will see Uncle John when my lord calls me home one day. God Bless you all.

Catherine,
I am so sorry for your loss, you will be in my thoughts and prayers. John was a good friend to me throughout my life and a good example to me of how a "good man" acts and behaves. He was a shining example to all who knew him. I will always remember (and still often use) his jokes and one-liners to brighten someones day, as he would do to all who knew him.
He will be missed by everyone who had the honor to know him.

I am left with many fond memories of Uncle John, he will certainly be missed. Sending you my love Aunt Catherine, Brenda, Amber and Nathan. My thoughts and prayers are with you now and always!
A poem I found here in the suggested entries was so fitting I had to include it. As one of the memories of Uncle John that I have and will cherish forever are the silver dollars he would give me as a child. They were such prized possesions to me then, and today are still a very sentimental part of my collection.
In My Pocket
I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.
My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.
They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.
Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.
But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

Catherine: It's hard to find the words - when things looked grim we prayed for the best, and God has given him the best. I will miss the jokes, our serious talks and his smile and his telling me to "come on over". He was a special man and will be missed by all. Love and prayers to you, Tess

Dear Catherine, I am so sorry to hear of John passing away. John and you have always been an inspiration. I truly enjoyed John's humor and your patience. You both have been and will continue to be in my prayers. I know I will always think of him around the Christmas season when I hear "The Little Drummerboy"! Grandaddy,
I have loved you since the moment i took my first breath. You have in many ways been like a father to me and Nathan not just a grandfather. I cannot imagine going forward in life without you. Everytime i think of any memory of you I always put the navy and your jokes in the same sentence. You were always there for us anytime we have ever needed you, and life will never be the same. I will always be your punky doodle and the kids will always remember and know who you are. You have been the best grandfather a girl could ever ask for. My heart has broken in half the minute you left this earth. The only thing that keeps the rest of my heart from breaking apart is knowing where you are at this moment. I will one day join you on those pearly streets, until then my sweet grandfather i love and miss you always.

Dear Catherine,
It is with sadness and joy that we have learned about John's passing to be with our Father. Sadness in that you and the family will miss him, and joy to know that some day we shall all be together again with the Lord.
We are truly thankful for the great times that John shared with us, and Danny and Freddie at Fairy Stone, high school football games, and at Trinity Tabernacle. He was a good Christian influence with the boys, a good song leader, and a joy to be with. Thank you Lord for placing him in with us, and for you Catherine for being a part of our lives... sharng in those treasured memories which shall remain in our hearts forever. Praise the Lord.

Brother John. Could certainly brighten up a room, with his smile. I enjoyed our visits to New Hope with he and his bride. And our meeting at Buffalo Ridge. As one dear friend said regarding the loss of one of his own " they are not lost when we know where they are..May the God of all Comfort be with all of Brother John family.
