John MOORE Obituary

ALEXANDRIA - John C. Moore (Jack), 90, died on April 24, 2010.
He was born in Washington, D.C., and lived most of his life in Northern Virginia. He was married to the love of his life, Dorothy (Dot) Hancock Moore, for 66 years. She preceded him in death in 2007 and he now joins her in heaven. His parents; two brothers; and one sister, also preceded him in death.
One brother, Harry of Florida, survives him. Jack was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He leaves behind four sons, all of Virginia, John A. Moore (Sally) of Springfield, Thomas M. Moore of Woodbridge, Daniel T. Moore (Cathy) of Woodbridge, Robert (Terry) Moore (Jo Ann) of Newport News; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Jack proudly served in the U.S. Marines, in the South Pacific during World War 11. He trained and handled war dogs used for security and detecting enemy ambushes. After the war, he was allowed to bring his German Shepherd war dog, Rex, home and remained the family pet for 12 years. After the war, he worked as a machinist at the Naval Gun Factory and later transferred to the Department of the Navy. He retired in 1974 from Defense Supply Agency.
Jack enjoyed sharing his passion for the outdoors with others. He remained very active after retirement, volunteering in many activities. He taught marksmanship and archery in the Boy Scouts and volunteered at Huntley Meadow Park in Alexandria. There he cleared trails, taught and managed wildlife habitat, and gave guided tours. The park honored Jack for 20 years of volunteer service. He was a member and past president of the Brotherhood of the Jungle Cock (Maryland Chapter), where he mentored youth in the art and skill of fly-fishing. He was a Life member of the American Legion and an honorary member of the Vietnam War Dog Association. In the year 2000, Jack attended the dedication of the 1st U.S. National War Dog Memorial in Riverside, Calif. Jack leaves a legacy of family, patriotism and his love for nature and the great outdoors.
A celebration of Jack's life will be held at 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 7th, at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Moore of Newport News, with Chaplain Deborah Morris presiding. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.
