John JAMES Obituary

HAMPTON - A valiant soldier, beloved husband, father and grandfather, Major (Retired) John Edward James Sr., 77, departed this life on Aug. 23, 2010. He was born in Stockton, Ala., on Sept. 22, 1932, to the late Lucille (Baker) and Willie Edward James.
John was educated at Central High School, Class of 1951 and graduated from Southern University in 1955. He proudly served in the United States Army as a Transportation Corps Officer. He served in many different theatres including Vietnam, Germany and Korea. He retired after 20 years of honorable service and received numerous awards and medals. During his career as a civilian, he worked as a Transportation Manager for the Military Traffic Management Command (MTMC), Eastern Area until his next retirement in 1997. He also worked in real estate from 1997 to 2004.
John was a faithful member of Greater Walters A.M.E. Zion Church. He was an active member of Southern University Alumni Association of Hampton Roads. He was a sponsoring member of the USO and maintained membership in the Military Officers Association of America and life member of Disabled American Veterans.
John was a gentle spirit and many have benefited from his generosity. He was a consummate athlete and pursued many sports related activities during his lifetime including baseball, football, track and field, bowling, boxing and scuba diving. He also played for The Mobile Black Bears of the Negro Baseball League in the 1950s.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, the late Grace Williams James.
He is survived by his children, daughter, Yolanda (Mario) of Lakewood, Wash.; sons, John (Denise) of Suffolk, Va., David (Katherine) of Seattle, Wash., and Darryl of Seattle, Wash.;15 grandchildren and a host of relatives and close friends.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at noon Saturday Sept. 11, at Greater Walters A.M.E. Zion Church, 656 Twenty Eighth Street, Newport News, VA 23607.
