Joseph BURNS Obituary

SMITHFIELD - Joseph Lawrence Burns Jr. passed away Saturday, May 8, 2010, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Born March 14, 1932, in Auburn, N.Y., he arrived in Hampton after serving in Korea with the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Langley Air Force Base until his Honorable Discharge in 1960. Joe worked for J.E. Campbell Heating and Air Conditioning Company, for 15 years, until starting Burns Heating and Air Conditioning Company in 1975. He was a successful business owner and retired in 1990.
In the late 60's and early 70's, Joe was an integral part in building and maintaining the Francis Mallory Little League "Field of Dreams." He and many volunteers built a beautiful baseball field accompanied with in-ground dugouts, concession stand and lights for night games. This field was a major accomplishment for that time and was enjoyed by many young ball players.
Joe was preceded in death by his father, Joseph L. Burns Sr.; sister, Jeanette Farr of Syracuse, N.Y.; and his wife of 37 years, Henrietta M. Burns.
He leaves behind three children, Joseph L. Burns III of Tifton, Ga., Gerald E. Burns of Naples, Fla., and Marcella L. Burns of Smithfield, Va. He is also survived by his mother, Genevieve Burns of Syracuse, N.Y.; sisters, Frannie Joseph of Syracuse, N.Y., Mary Miron of Newport News, Va., and Geraldine Vollick of Jacksonville, Fla.; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. In addition, Joe is survived by his "extended family" of Smithfield, The Gromlichs (Rich, Marty, Chris, Angie, Justin and Kim).
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at Peninsula Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 13, at the funeral home, with burial following in Parklawn Memorial Park.
Memorial Contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

To the family of Joe Burns

I worked for the company that supplied Joe with the Heating & A/c equipmet and supplies he needed when he ran his business. I am no relation to the Jim Campbell he worked for earlier in his career, in fact he used to tease me about having the same name.

Joe was not only a good customer, he was a good friend. He liked me for some reason, so he always gave me a hard time, and complained about everything. But I knew that he knew he was just having fun.

He and I were both great Redskin fans, and used to talk sports as much as business. We exchanged Christmas cards for years after he retired.

J L was a good man, and I know a good father, you have my deepest sympathy in your loss.

Jerry, Joey, Marci

Our prayers and thoughts are with you during this sorrowful and very difficult time. It is with a very heavy heart that we all will miss your Dad tremendously as a large part of our Family will also be missing - as well as a dear Friend; 'Uncle Joe'; Neighbor; Home, Property & Mechanical Consultant; vocal Political Analyst; and our very own on-site garage 'tinker' who could make anything. Not to forget the horses, dogs, cats, chickens and guinea birds that he visited every day, several times a day for his personal entertainment.

Words that we hope you find comfort in during your time of sorrow - "I have made death a Messenger of Joy to Thee, why dost thou grieve?" [from Baha'i Writings]

We know Joe's transition from this level of existence is one of peace and tranquility and he will never be forgotten as his legacy and your previously departed Mom's will live on. No one can ever take precious memories from you.
