To Brandy & Myra,
My name is Tim Quinlan and I was stationed with your dad while both of us served in the U.S. Navy. From 1976 to 1979, we were air traffic controllers at Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia. I only recently learned of not only your father's passing some time ago, but your mom's as well. I was most sad to discover this.

I'm sure you wouldn't remember me as you were young girls at the time, but your dad and I became fast friends during our Navy days. I was a single guy from Southern California, stationed in Virginia, and your dad was kind enough to tutor me on all things "Southern" and "Virginian". I told him one time that I didn't think of Virginia as a southern state and he was quick to remind me that "Richmond was the Capital of the Confederacy." He showed how naive I was and how proud he was of his heritage.

I was welcomed into your home and I spent many hours there in the company of your family...you girls, your mom & dad. We had meals together and watched sports on TV. Your folks were very generous with their time and I remember those visits fondly. I can still remember your dad's huge yellow, extended cab, Ford pickup truck with a camper shell on the bed like it was yesterday. That thing looked like it was a mile long.

After I left the Navy in 1979, I returned to Southern California to continue my air traffic control career with the federal government. I returned to Virginia in 1980 on a cross-country bus trip to visit your family. Regrettably, that was the last time I saw or spoke to your mom and dad. I never forgot you all however and every so often I would think of your mom & dad and how I enjoyed their company and kindness. As I write this, I think of some of the experiences your dad and I shared as co-workers in the NAS Oceana control tower and some of the trips we took beyond the Tidewater area as friends. I remember a camping trip to the Virginia mountains with with Joey and some of our other cohorts. We had CB radios in our trucks in those days. His handle was "Big Toe", mine was "Little Toe".

I know your dad was a baseball fan, as was I. I played on our division's softball team of which I think your dad was a part of. In one game, I broke my ankle sliding into second base and was in a cast for about 8 weeks. During that time, Joey and I, along with a couple of other pals, drove to Cincinnati to watch a Reds game at Riverfront Stadium. We had seats in the last row of the stadium out in center field. It was a hoot to watch me hump up the steep stairs to the last row with a cast on my leg. Your dad thought that was funny as hell. I'll never forget that.

I'll also never forget your family. I'm saddened that they left this world so early in life but I am grateful that we traveled the same path for as long as we did. I wish it could have been longer. Knowing Joey & Becky was one of my most memorable life experiences.

I don't know if you'll see this or not since they've been gone so long but please know they were a part of my life that...though short when measured against a lifetime...will endure.

Bless you and your families,
Tim Quinlan

It was with great sadness that I received the message of Joey's passing. I still remember when he and I both went to work at DGS, years ago, both fairly new to the agency. He used to laugh and tease me that he seen me fly past him each afternoon going home and told me to slow my leadfoot down. I remember too thinking what a nice and pleasant person he always was. Then again when I got the opportunity to work with him at VDC and him talking about his girls. You could just tell how proud of his family he was. Joey was one of those people that when you met him you instantly liked him. I can say that I only remember people say nice things of him when you mentioned his name.

I left VDC and did not get the chance to meet you Becky and want to express my condolences to you and your family. Know that he was a kind and good person and was real proud of his family he had made. May God be with each of you during this time and allow you time to grieve so that you can remember all of the good times.

Mrs. Stodghill and family,
We were so sorry to hear of Joey's illness and passing.
We have worked with Joey, seems like forever, repairing the forklifts at VDC. We at AM DAVIS, Inc. will miss working with and for him. Whenever he would call in and I happened to answer the phone I could always recognize his voice. He was always pleasant and easy to talk to and again to work with. He will be missed by his AM DAVIS, Inc. family and friends.
Spencer and Debby Whitt and everyone at AM DAVIS, INC.

Becky and Family,
I am so sorry to hear of Joey's passing. I will always remember him standing on the pitcher's mound. He seemed 7 ft tall. Man could he put some heat on that baseball! I wanted to come visit and never made it. My loss! May God bless you all in this most difficult time.

Dear Becky and Family
How could I ever begin to tell you how sorry I was to hear about Joey. It still does not seem real. Although I have not seen Joey in a long time, I think of you two real often. Since we all grew up together in Edgehill, you never forget those childhood memories. All the ball games yelling for Joey and our wonderful teenage years. I am so glad that he was able to see those precious grandchildren
and spend time with them. My heart goes out to you, Brandy and Myra. Joey was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend to everyone and could always make us laugh. You have so many wonderful memories, and those memories will keep him with you each and every day. He is right there in your heart, and is an angel on your shoulder. I enjoyed our phone conversation the other day and I am so proud of how strong you are. HE loved you very much and his girls and grandbabies and your whole family. If there is anything I can do please contact me. You are in our thoughts and prayers, God will take you through one day at a time. He is not in any more pain, he is resting in the arms of Jesus.
God Bless you and all of your family.
Love Ya

Becky,
There are so many memories of Joey growing up together that he will always be remembered in my heart. Little league, Babe Ruth, basketball and baseball at YORK,Kentucky vs Carolina, his dad coaching, spending the night, running with him and lumpy, dogging each other, dating and marrying you, moving your furniture from house to house with Ulysses, your kids, Myra and Tony renting our house, marrying his second cousin, getting put in the Navy jail for questioning because I was waiting in his car for him to get off duty, laughing, laughing, laughing. You made him complete when he married you and you two were perfect for each other. I know this is hard but thank you for the memories.

Words alone cannot express my sympathy on the untimely death of your beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. To say that his time with us was far too short is an understatement. The reality is that he will be sorely missed by all who loved and knew him.
