Keith LeRoy Hansen Obituary
NEWPORT NEWS - Keith LeRoy Hansen, 80, passed away Monday, June 3, 2013, following a very short illness while visiting his son, Mark, in Illinois. Born in Sioux City Iowa, Keith was raised in Kansas and graduated from Hays High School in 1951. Following two years at Fort Hays State College, where he met his future wife, Gwendolyn Arnold, Keith enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1953. He completed pilot training, received his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant and married Gwen in 1955. Keith served as a T-33 jet trainer instructor pilot in Texas, a KC-97 in-flight refueling tanker pilot in New Hampshire. He was a C-130 Hercules transport pilot in Virginia and during Vietnam in 1968-1969. Keith earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star Medal and the Air Medal for his service in Vietnam. While in the Air Force, Keith completed his Bachelor of Military Science degree at the University of Omaha, and a Master of Business Administration degree from George Washington University. In 1973, Keith retired as a Major from Langley Air Force Base in Virginia after 20 years of service. Keith continued to fly private airplanes for recreation, and at age 65 earned his private helicopter pilot's license. After retiring from the Air Force, Keith attended Christopher Newport College where he earned his public school teaching certificate and began a 25 year career as a high school math teacher at Denbigh High School and Woodside High School in Newport News. Keith continued his teacher education training by earning an Advanced Certificate from the College of William & Mary. Keith was very active in Key Club and Kiwanis, and drove his reproduction Model A Ford in the Denbigh Day parade for many years. Following their retirements, Keith and Gwen traveled to the Middle East, Europe, Asia and Central America. They were avid bridge players at home in Newport News. Keith was preceded in death by Gwen, his wife of 55 years, in 2010. Keith is survived by his three sons, Stephen Hansen and domestic partner, Dennis Adams of Fort Lauderdale, FL, David Hansen and wife, Sue (Moore) of Raleigh, NC, and Mark Hansen and wife, Jill (St John) of O'Fallon, IL; his brother, Richard Hansen and wife, Lynne (Davis) of Cincinnati, OH; and seven grandchildren, Christopher, Rachel and fiance, Albert Manson, Rebekah and husband, Allan Upham, Nathan, Megan and husband, Daniel Newman, Jon and wife, Kelsey (Katz) and Elisabeth. Keith was a 48 year member of Warwick Memorial United Methodist Church in Denbigh where a visitation will be held beginning at 4:30 PM on July 23, 2013 with a memorial service to immediately follow at 6:00 PM. Keith will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors on July 24, 2013 at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, Keith and the family have requested that donations be made to the Warwick Memorial Church Building Fund, 38 Hoopes Road, Newport News, VA 23602, or to the Kiwanis Club of Denbigh, P.O. Box 2184, Newport News, VA 23609. Arrangements are by Weymouth Funeral Home.
