FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. - Laura Jean Stein-Stapleford passed away unexpectedly on Nov. 5, 2012, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., while recovering from surgery.
The only child of Jack and Marie Stein, Laurie was born on Nov. 10, 1952, and grew up in Munster, Ind., before moving to Florida to attend high school. She went on to attend Mount Holyoke College where she majored in English. She then went to work as a reporter for the Miami Herald before finding her calling in public relations and marketing. While working in Dallas, Laurie met Fred Stapleford, and the two were married on Nov. 1, 1980, in Munster, Ind. After finding success on marketing campaigns across the country, she moved to Williamsburg, Va., and started her own company. She won numerous awards for her work but always made sure that her husband and their two children came first. After her husband passed away Laurie taught at VCU before returning to Florida to serve as the marketing director for her high school alma mater, Pine Crest - a move which rejuvenated her both professionally and personally.
As a lover of high fashion, thrower of great parties and successful entrepreneur, she truly was a renaissance woman in a league all her own. Most of all though, she was a loving wife, a supportive mother, a loyal friend, and fiercely devoted to all of those she cared for. She will be deeply missed by her friends and family.
Laura is survived by her sons, John and Hunter; and her pups, Roxy and Charley.
Friends and family are invited to remember her at an informal memorial from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at the Matthiesen's residence in Williamsburg, Va.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor her memory may do so making a donation to the Pelican Harbor preservation fund at http://www.pelicanharbor.org. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.
