Leigh JOHNSON Obituary

HAMPTON - Leigh Hudgins Johnson, 65, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009, in Sentara Hampton Careplex after a brief illness.
He was the son of the late Walter B. (Scottie) Johnson Sr. and Margaret (Peggy) Johnson Kyle and the stepson of the late William R. Kyle Sr.
He is survived by a stepbrother, the Rev. William R. Kyle Jr. and his wife, Shirley of Williamsburg; two stepsisters, Shirley K. Conway and her husband, Edward of Hampton and Ella Mae Wimer and her husband, John of Suffolk; as well as nieces and nephews and a very special friend, Church Enlinsky, with whom he enjoyed a special bond.
Leigh was a resident of Sawyer House at Eggleston Services where he leaves many who loved him as a brother. Much appreciation goes to the staff for all they did for Leigh in his daily care and final days.
A member of First United Methodist Church, Leigh attended the Happy Class Sunday School. His love of his church was very evident as he shared with others about his faith and love of God.
Leigh knew no strangers and touched many with his joy. There will be a void by his absence. He had a great spirit when looking forward to his job at the Eggleston workshop, bowling, Explorer Scouts in which he was founding member 42 years ago and present president, Happy Class, attending worship, biking, Special Olympics, Camp Rainbow, birthdays, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Anyone who spent time with Leigh with the eyes to see and ears to hear, as well as an open heart couldn't help but be humbled by his great joy and love despite his handicap.
"There are in the end three things that last; faith, hope and love and the greatest of these is love" (I Corinthians 13:1 3). Leigh loved and loved well. He did more for us in that he allowed us to love better by helping him.
Burial will be private. A memorial service will be held at the church he cared for so much, First United Methodist Church, Hampton at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 30, with the Rev. William R. Kyle and the Rev. Gary Alvis presiding.
Following the service, friends are invited to visit with the family in the church Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First United Methodist Church, 110 E. Queen Street, Hampton 23669 or Explorer Post 140, 1 Singleton Drive, Hampton, 23666 in Leigh's memory.

I always looked forward to Leigh's greeting, " Hi, Gorgeous!" when he entered the door at Camp Rainbow Connection. He gave this greeting to every woman there and we all treasured it. We will miss Leigh next summer, but I know his spirit will be there to let us know we are doing things right.
God be with each of his family members and his friends.

When I would see Leigh riding his bike over from Sawyer, I knew it was going to be a great day when he would greet me with a smile and "Hello Gorgious". Leigh's memories will always be with us.

A great soul has gone on to be with The Father. He will be missed by all of us at First United Methodist Church. My prayer is for the family to find peace and to remember all of the wonderful things Leigh did for everyone. He was amazing!

Leigh was such a special friend to my sister Judy Howland. She is very sad that her friend Leigh of 38 years at Sarah Hudgins has passed away. There will always be a special place in our hearts for Leigh. Our prayers are with your family.

Leigh was such a charming and honest person who will be missed by his friends at First United Methodist Church in Hampton. I am lucky enough to call myself one of those people and would spend time with Leigh in the Happy People class. Although I was the one leading the lessons, I've learned more from Leigh and his classmates than anything that I could have taught while substituting in the Happy People class. Leigh, you will be missed.
