SPRING GROVE - Lennie Edwards Barnes died on April 25, 2014, at her home, just as she wished, overlooking the farm that she loved. She was born on June 29, 1919. Lennie's family traveled by covered wagon from her birthplace of Chesterfield County, SC, to her next home in North Carolina. From there, her family traveled by train to make their home in Hopewell, Virginia. They later moved to Claremont, VA, where she graduated as the Salutatorian from Claremont High School in 1937. She graduated from the Petersburg Hospital School of Nursing in 1941, and worked for many years at John Randolph Hospital. She also served the community many years doing private duty nursing and assisting those in need. Lennie married Reuben Barnes in 1947. They lived in Carsley and then made their home in Spring Grove, VA in 1957. She was a member of Claremont United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School. She was also a member of the Spring Grove Community Club for many years. Lennie was preceded in death by her husband, Reuben A. Barnes, Sr. and her son Reuben A. (Artie) Barnes, Jr. She was also preceded by her parents, Millard James and Etta Mae Gray Edwards. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Fran Barnes of Spring Grove and son, Ken Barnes (Esther) of Yorktown. In addition, she has six grandchildren, Chris Barnes (Marnie), Julie Barnes Moyer (Grant), Brad Barnes (Stephanie), Patrick Barnes (Judy), Ben Barnes (Alicia), and Brian Barnes (Kim). She has 9 great-grandchildren- Abigail, Emily, Carter, Grace, Ethan, Britton, Brielle, Maggie and Bladen. She is also survived by her brothers, Zane Edwards (Charlotte) and Rev. James Gray Edwards (Agnes) and many nephews and nieces. The family is grateful to her caretakers, LeeAnn Senachal, Brenda Temple, and Doris Saunders, for their devotion and kindness to Lennie. Visitation will be at Lennie's home on Sunday, April 27, from 1- 5 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Claremont United Methodist Church on Monday, April 28 at 2 p.m., with burial following in the Waverly Cemetery.
