Leonard MESSICK Obituary

HAMPTON - Leonard Watkins 'Lenny' Messick, 66, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2010.
He was a devoted husband to his loving wife of 45 years, Catherine Forbes Messick, providing special care to her during the past 11 years. He is also survived by two sons, Keith Forbes Messick and his longtime girlfriend, Elizabeth Swanson, and Leonard Craig Messick and his wife, Suzann; daughter, Kim Messick O'Conner and her husband, Jason; three granddaughters, Addison Kim Messick, Koral Marie O'Conner, and Jewel Kim O'Conner; and a brother, Wayne Messick and his wife, Felicia.
Lenny was a lifetime Fox Hill resident, where he enjoyed living on Harris Creek, boating, and fishing. He was a 1963 Hampton High graduate where he was a member of the band. He had his own contracting business, Fox Hill Contractors, for several years, was a member of the Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Union, and was a Codes and Compliance Inspector for the City of Hampton for the past 27 years. For many years, Lenny was a Volunteer Fireman in Fox Hill. He enjoyed spending time in the mornings with his friends at Wallace's Marina, playing cards and telling stories. Lenny was an avid Redskins fan, enjoyed restoring John Deere tractors, and saving his pecans from the squirrels. He especially enjoyed coaching girls' softball, and watching his daughter, Kim, play.
The family would like to thank Dr. Scott Kruger, his staff, and the nurses on the 5th floor of Sentara Careplex Hampton Hospital.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home. A funeral service will take place at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 17, at Fox Hill Central United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Wayne Moore, Dr. Jay Russ, Dr. Chester Brown officiating. Interment will follow in Clark Cemetery, Fox Hill.

My condolences to the Messick family. Lenny will be greatly missed at the Santa's Attic Xmas. Craft Show. He added a certain dynamic by simply being there. He made things fun!

Several entries here talk about Lenny's sense of humor. He and I had a running joke when I worked for the city. Depending on who saw who first, we would say, "Gotta minute? Tell me all you know." And laugh. What a wonderful man. He will be missed.

To the Messick Family, I am so sorry for your loss. Although we worked in different City departments, Mr. Messick always greeted you with a smile and kind word when you saw him. May you find peace and comfort during this time and in the days to come.

To the Family; Lenny will be extremely missed. I have been with the city for 4 years and whenever I needed a building question answered, Lenny was my go to person. He was always such a pleasure to talk with, he never had an attitude, he never showed that I was bothering him, he was always glad to help. He will be missed, I am praying that God gives you all strength during this difficult time.

Lenny was like a big brother. I planted my garden, cut my pamcus grass on his cue, and trusted the structure of my house to him. He and his sense of humor will be missed.
Respectfully, Bob Stump
