Lucy Zember Obituary

HAMPTON - Lucy M. Zember, 82, of Willis Wharf, Va., went to be with her Heavenly Savior, Nov. 1, 2009, with her family by her side.
A native of Willis Wharf, Va., she was known to all her family and friends as Mom, Daughter, Sister, Grandma, Great-Grandmother, Aunt, Belle and Lucy. She was such a strong soldier as she conquered many life circumstances with her last years surviving living life from a bed and wheelchair. Her faith in God never wavered and she is a testimony to us all. Lucy served her community as a registered nurse at Hampton General and Hampton Veterans Administration, where she retired after many years of service to our veterans. She was also a missionary to everyone but was also one several years back serving over on the Eastern Shore, where she grew up. She was a very faithful member of Langley Baptist Church for many years while serving in many capacities with her passion being the Women's Missionary Union. She was always eager to serve others in what ever capacity she could.
Welcoming her in heaven are her husband, Preston Zember Sr.; daughter, Sharon Zember; parents, Jeter and Lucy Moore; many friends and family members.
Left to cherish the many happy memories are her daughter, Karen Onks and husband, George Sr.; her son, Preston Zember Jr. and wife, Cindy of Hampton; sisters, Mary Kaczorowski and Florence Lawson of Willis Wharf, Va.; many special nieces and nephews; very special friends, Judd Nuchols, Loretta Carpenter, and Lajean Boyce; and many friends to include her church family at Langley Baptist Church.
Lucy's favorite name was "grandma" and she loved to be with her very "special grandchildren", George Onks Jr. "Joey," Jessica Zember, Adam Zember, Jason Onks, Kimberly Onks, Logan Zember; and "special great-grandchild", Nathan Onks.
A celebration of Lucy's life will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, at Langley Baptist Church, with burial to follow in Parklawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Langley Baptist Church Memorial Fund.
Arrangements by R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Karen,
My heart goes out to you. I know I speak for my mom at Coliseum Park, and my daily visits to see my mom and yours...she is so very missed! I am grateful for the bond our mom's shared and how they looked out for one another. My mom so wanted to come to the funeral, she wanted you to know that. Your mom was an angel on earth and now she is your guardian angel. When I think of her, I think of the song: "When the Saints Go Marchin' In". Truly, her cup is overflowing with joy in Heaven. I am always here for you, anytime.

Karen, your Mom will be greatly missed at Coliseum Park as many of the residents got to know her and love as did my Mom who will also miss your daily visits. Your care and devotion to your Mother was an inspiration to us all.

Dear Karen, Buddy and Families-Though I am far from Virginia now (living in the Arkansas Ozarks), I will never forget Lucy's goodness and the strength with which she handled her illness. I will also never forget the love and endurance shown within your family-it was a gift for me. To have known and worked with Lucy, your family and each of you is a memory I will hold in my heart. Please know I will keep each of you in my prayers during this difficult time-God Bless You All. Memories are sacred- my prayer is that they will sustain you until you meet again. May Dear Lucy rest in peace without pain any longer.

Karen, I am so so sorry to hear about your Mother's passing. Charlotte emailed me here at work this morning telling me she seen your Mom's obituary in the paper. Well, she is no longer suffering, that's what I said when my Father & Mother passed away, they are no longer in pain and are now happy in Heaven! I was so stressed out when they were in pain. I knew they didn't want to live like they were living you know? May the happy memories you had with your Mother get you through this sad time. God Bless you and your family. Love you!
