NEWPORT NEWS - Margaret Ann Abel, 79, entered into entered eternal rest on Saturday, November 21, 2013 following a protracted battle with Alzheimer's disease. A devoted wife and mother, Margaret was born in Dayton, Ohio and graduated from Fairview High School before attending the Ohio State University, where she was a proud member of the Alpha Phi sorority. While earning her Bachelor's Degree, she met the love of her life, Kenneth Abel, of Maumee, Ohio. Following graduation from college, she married Ken in 1955, who was then an Army officer stationed at Fort Eustis. As a military wife, Margaret created a loving home in 13 different locales, from Europe to the Caribbean and throughout various postings within the United States. Among her many interests were a life-long love of sewing, cooking, and gardening. Having retired in Newport News, Ken and Margaret enjoyed traveling, taking cruises, and spending time with family. Margaret willingly offered her talents to many civic and community organizations, including service as President of the Church Council of St Paul's Lutheran Church, volunteering at Mary Immaculate Hospital, and serving as a docent at the Mariner's Museum. She also was an enthusiastic member of the Riverdale Garden Club and the local chapter of Alpha Phi. Margaret will be remembered for her love of music, her infectious humor, her ready smile, and her unfailingly upbeat and positive attitude. She was preceded in death by her father, Paul Budai; her mother, Helen; her brother, Paul; and her beloved husband, Ken. Survivors include her sister, Dorothy; her sons, Chris and Dan; her daughters-in-law, Laura and Courtney; and her grandchildren, Benjamin, Becky, Geoffrey, and his wife, Kristen. A celebration of Margaret's life will be held at Weymouth Funeral Home in Newport News at 6 PM on Monday, December 9, 2013, after which the family will receive visitors. Margaret will be rejoining Ken in an inurnment at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date. The Abels wish to thank all those who cared for and assisted Margaret during her lengthy illness. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in Margaret Abel's memory to the Mariner's Museum. Arrangements are by Weymouth Funeral Home.
