Marshall Sheppard Obituary

GLOUCESTER - Marshall Boyd Sheppard Sr., passed away Sunday morning, Nov. 8, 2009, after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving family. Born on Sept. 6, 1928, 'Boyd' was a lifelong resident of Gloucester. He graduated from Botetourt High School on June 3, 1946, enlisted in the Army and received the World War ll Victory Metal and Army of Occupation Medal, Japan. He graduated from the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock's Apprentice School, April 22, 1953, and retired from the company, as a sectional superintendent of the electrical department in 1990, with over 41 years of service.
Boyd was a lifelong member of Bellamy United Methodist Church. He was a 25-year member of the Historic Virginia Peninsula Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America. During those years, he took great pride in keeping his 1949 Ford, 1963 Dodge 330, 1966 Chrysler Newport and Mark IV Lincoln shiny and looking new. He was very proud of the many state and national trophies he won at various car shows over the years.
He was a member of the Woodman of the World Lodge 216, Gloucester, and also was involved with the Veterans Memorial Committee and the Bellamy Memorial Cemetery Committee.
Boyd was an avid sportsman and raised his beagle hunting dogs. He often talked of how there was no better joy than listening to them 'run' a rabbit.
He and his beloved wife, Peggy, enjoyed many mountain trips, especially in the fall, when the trees were at their peak. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, who walked through life with quiet dignity. His advice and wisdom will be sorely missed by his family and his many friends.
Boyd was preceded in death by his parents, Marshall Gregory and Mary Moore Sheppard; and his son, Keith Sheppard.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy of 56 years; son, Marshall Boyd Sheppard Jr. 'M.B.' and his wife, Sue; grandson, Quinton Sheppard; and sisters, Elizabeth Kladler and husband, Paul, and Cassie Mae Silvis and husband, Clark. He is also survived by a host of loving nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, at Andrews Funeral Home, Gloucester. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, at Bellamy United Methodist Church, Gloucester, by the Rev. Kenneth Waclo and the Rev. Don Davis. Burial will follow in the Bellamy Memorial Cemetery. Following the service there will be a reception for the family in the church fellowship hall.
Andrews Funeral Home, Gloucester, is in charge of arrangements. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.
