Mary FATELY Obituary

HAMPTON - Mary Elizabeth Fately, of Hampton Va., died Friday, July 16, 2010, at the age of 92.
She was raised in Harrisonburg, Va., and spent the early part of her life at home with her parents, the late Millard Frances Eakle and Virgie White Eakle. In 1946, she married the late T. Lloyd Fately in Harrisonburg. They soon moved to the Hampton area, which they chose to make their permanent home. Mary and Lloyd both worked for Basic Construction Company of Newport News, Va. Mary spent over 30 years with Basic in administrative positions of increasing responsibility. She was well liked and considered capable and professional by her coworkers. It was said that Mary could type so fast, it sounded like the typewriter was playing a song. She enjoyed visiting with family, cooking, traveling, and highly valued the simple pleasure of good friends. Mary loved delicious baked goods and candy! In her later years, Mary kept her mind absolutely sharp and loved challenging crossword puzzles and playing the game show, Jeopardy, at which she excelled. She was a great teller of family stories. Mary Fately will be missed by her family and friends.
Mrs. Fately was preceded in death by her husband Lloyd; brothers, Robert F. Eakle, and William Eakle.
She is survived by nieces, nephews, related family and friends, who were grateful to have known her.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m.Thursday, July 22, 2010, at the Old Stone Church Cemetery, Ft. Defiance (Mount Sidney), Va. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon Thursday, at Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Home, in Waynesboro, prior to the graveside service. Growing up, we always looked forward to a visit from or to our Aunt Mary. She was always upbeat and so full of energy. As an adult, I now realize that she was someone to admire and an example to by. She lived life simply in her apartment and didn't need a lot of material possessions. Her pleasures in life came from talking and visiting with family and friends. As did her brothers, Uncle William and my dad, Bob (aka "Frank"), Aunt Mary loved sharing stories about their childhood adventures "in the valley" - Harrisonburg was their "home". I am very sad but take some comfort in sister's thoughts that Aunt Mary, Uncle William and dad are all together now. I miss them and will always hold onto their memories.

Aunt Mary was a joyful, social whirlwind. She was so well versed in the family history, she wrote stories about her life, and chatted endlessly about her life. She embraced everyone with care and love. She was very smart and very well connected with family and friends. I will miss you deeply Aunt Mary. Your spirt is with me and I know you are in heaven. God bless you. I love you and miss you.

Aunt Mary was a joyful, social whirlwind. She wrote stories of the Eakle side of the family and she was very well versed on news, family history, and stayed connected with family and friends. Aunt Mary is in heaven, her spirit is with me and those she touched. I will dearly miss Aunt Mary and that saddens me deeply. Her love of life, enthusiastic spirit, her very high energy, her whole being was one of sharing and connecting.
Aunt Mary, I love you now and forever.
Shirley Eakle Freehill (niece of Aunt Mary; daughter of Robert Frank Eakle, Aunt Mary brother.

Aunt Mary, that’s who she was to me and also “my Dad’s sister”. She was amazingly sharp and well versed on family history & memories. Her smile, laughter and love of life personality are refreshing thoughts of her. I’m sad for family & friends that share this loss and offer my deepest sympathy to you. I like to believe that Aunt Mary is now united with my Dad, Uncle Lloyd & all other family & friends that now rest in peace. There is a new star in our Heaven ~ Sally

I worked with Mary Fately for a short period of time at the downtown Newport News office of Basic Construction. I was there from 1979 to 1981. I always remember how she went to lunch with Louise Burton and Elizabeth Conkling. She was always a nice person and liked by all. My prayers are with the family during this time.
