Mary BLALOCK Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Mary Sue Blalock, a native of Greensboro, N.C., was born Sept. 2, 1927 to the late Virginia Dare Dodson Blalock and Isaac Jones Blalock. Also preceding her in death were her sisters, Iris Marie Dodson and Sarah Ellen Dare Blalock Andrews.
Survivors include a niece, Karen Andrews.
Aunt Sue loved all animals, most especially cats; reading, especially Agatha Christie and Charles Dickens; gardening with both flowers and vegetables; and sewing, making many of her own clothes. Her favorite movie stars were William Holden and Harrison Ford. She loved Reece's Peanut Butter Cups, National League Baseball, and her beloved University of North Carolina Tarheels.
She taught me to read the comics before first grade and how to bake buttermilk biscuits in a wood stove. As a graduate of the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, with a degree in History, she taught that the why of history is not just the dates, and to appreciate the rainy days as well as the sunny days. She treated her life as the gift it was, always looking for the positive side, regarding all with kindness and gentleness. When hardships came her way, she summoned an inner strength that was rooted in her steadfast love of God to guide her through. Of all the gifts she gave me, these were the most important.
Aunt Sue moved to Virginia in 1996, after a stroke took her from her home that she loved, to live with her sister, Dare and her husband, and then myself until choosing to live at Riverside Regional Convalescent Center until her passing on June 24, 2010.
Many heartfelt thank you's to all her caregivers and friends at the Chesapeake Unit, for giving her a home with you, because it was not the building that was home, it was all the people she knew and cared about that made you her home.
"Tarheel born, and Tarheel bred, and when I die, I'll be a Tarheel dead" summed up her love for her North Carolina home, and so, she will be returning home to be with her family. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.
