Mary Jackson Obituary

HAMPTON - Mary Winston Jackson, 83, of Hampton, Va., passed peacefully into death on Friday, Feb. 11, 2005, at Riverside Convalescent Home in Hampton, Va. She was born on April 9, 1921, to the late Frank C. and Ella Scott Winston. Mary grew up in Hampton and after graduating with highest honors from high school, she then continued her education at Hampton Institute, earning her Bachelor of Science Degrees in Mathematics and Physical Science. Following graduation, Mary taught in Maryland prior to joining NASA. Mary retired from the NASA Langley Research Center in 1985 as an Aeronautical Engineer after 34 years. She served as a Girl Scout leader and/or committee worker over a period of 20 years. She was a member of Bethel AME Church, the Newport News-Hampton Chapter of the Continental Societies, Inc., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and a former member of numerous civic and social organizations. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Frank C. and Ella Scott Winston, and her husband, Levi Jackson Sr. She is survived by her son, Levi Jackson Jr.; daughter-in-law, Charlene Jackson of Hampton, Va.; her daughter, Carolyn Marie Lewis and husband, Raymond, of Newport News, Va.; her sister, Ella Strothers of Baltimore, Md.; three grandchildren, Wanda Jackson, Bryan Jackson and KaShawnta Lee of Hampton, Va.; three great-grandchildren, Charnise, Kanisha and Tyesha Jackson of Hampton, Va.; a very special friend, James Williams of Hampton, Va.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Viewing will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Ronald C. Perkins Funeral Home, 251 W. Queen St., Hampton. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Bethel AME Church, 94 Lincoln St., Hampton. The family will assemble at Ronald C. Perkins Funeral Home at noon. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. Arrangements by Ronald C. Perkins Funeral Home, Ronald C. Perkins Jr. Funeral Director.

I joined NASA in 1971 in the wind tunnel branch where Mary was an engineer at that time. The mathematics section where Mary started her career was on the floor above. We spoke occasionally and I found her to be a kind and well-appreciated engineer.
