Mildred Bluhm Obituary
STERLING - Mildred Bluhm was born Mildred Norma Schroeder on August 31, 1929 in Thief River Falls, Minnesota, to Victor Emmanuel and Dorothea Schroeder as the youngest of six children. She received an associate's degree in education from Dr. Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minnesota. After teaching school for several years, she moved to St. Paul, Minnesota, where she worked for Concordia College. It was there that she met her future husband, Gerhardt Bluhm. The two were married on October 4, 1953, and eventually had four children. Mrs. Bluhm lived in South St. Paul, Minnesota, where she was active in the Concordia Lutheran Church adult choir until the family moved to Newport News, Virginia, in 1964. Mrs. Bluhm continued her musical activities as a member of the Resurrection Lutheran Church adult choir, leading a children's choir, and teaching piano to young students. She was also involved in a number of charitable endeavors, such as preparing bandages for cancer patients and contributing to Lutheran World Relief. In addition, she volunteered at Patrick Henry Hospital, visiting the residents, coordinating bingo games, and became known as a person who gave selflessly of her time in reaching out to the sick and lonely. In 2001 she moved to Northern Virginia to be closer to her children and resided there until her passing on December 26. Mrs. Bluhm was preceded in death by her beloved husband, who passed into eternity in 2000. She is survived by her four children, Nathan Bluhm of Colorado Springs, CO, Tamara Bluhm Cocker of Fairfax County, VA, Rebecca Bluhm of Fairfax County, VA, and Kevin Bluhm of Charlotte, NC, and her nine grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at 4:00pm at Resurrection Lutheran Church by Rev. Ben Dolby. Interment will be private.
