Mildred DOWNING Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Mildred F. Downing, 92, died on Tuesday, April 6, 2010.
She was a native of Suffolk, Va., and lived in Newport News since 1946. Mrs. Downing was a member of Carver Memorial Presbyterian Church. She was also an emeritus member of The Links, Inc., and The Girl Friends, Inc.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Conway Downing Sr.; her parents, Charles and Virginia Finch; and her sister, Lorraine F. Shavers.
Survivors include her children, Sharon Johnson, Paula Peyton, and Conway Downing Jr.; grandchildren, Carmen Downing Fields (Sherard Fields), Conway Downing III (Farrell Redwine), and Walter Peyton V; great-grandsons, Terrence Ridley and Austin Redwine Downing; niece, Pamela Shavers-King; daughters-in-law, Yvonne Custis-Downing and Marialice Williams; brother-in-law, Willis Downing (Theresa Roberson); and cousins, Fred Skeeter (Elsie Skeeter) and Dora Daniels.
Viewing will be from noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 14, at Ronald C. Perkins Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 15, at Carver Memorial Presbyterian Church, 830 25th St., Newport News, VA 23607. Interment will follow at Hampton Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests that donations be made to Carver Memorial Presbyterian Church, to support the establishment and maintenance of the Dr. Conway A. Downing Sr. Dental Clinic in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
