Oscar C. SHELDON

WILLIAMSBURG - On Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, Oscar Cecil "Mike" Sheldon went to be with The Lord. He passed peacefully while at Patriots Colony at Williamsburg Convalescent Center.
Born in Chesterfield County, Va., on Dec. 8, 1920, Mike was the son of the late Sidney Gaylord and Ada Rudd Sheldon.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Wesley, Jack, and Buck Sheldon; and two sisters, Nellie Stonell and Helen Jennings.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Susie King Sheldon; his son, Sidney "Mickey"; two grandchildren, Steven Sheldon and his wife, Sharon of Dolphin, Va., and David Sheldon of Center Cross, Va.; three great-grandchildren, Sarah and Jonathan Sheldon of Kingsport, Tenn., and Whitney Waller of Dolphin, Va. Mike is also survived by his beloved brother, Sidney E. "Pete" Sheldon and his wife, Roxie, of Williamsburg, Va.; beloved sisters-in-law, Philly Landrum of Richmond, Va., Evelyn King of Callao, Va., and Dorothy "Dot" King of Red Oak, Va.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mike was prominent and well respected in the lumber industry. In 1945, Mike, along with his two brothers, Wesley and Jack, and his father, Sidney, incorporated the business known as Sheldon Lumber Company in Toano. The business remained a landmark in the community until 1995.
Mike was a longtime faithful member of Williamsburg United Methodist Church, and was a member of James City Ruritan Club for many years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing with countless friends until his health began to fail.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 14, 2009, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg, Va. A funeral service will be held at Williamsburg United Methodist Church, 500 Jamestown Rd., Williamsburg, on Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2009, at 2 p.m., with burial immediately following at James City Chapel Cemetery at Norge, Va.
