Patrick MALARKEY Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - Patrick Thomas Malarkey Sr., 67, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, April 21, 2010, in Sentara Williamsburg Hospital, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born May 9, 1942, in Newport News, he was a lifelong resident of the Peninsula. He was a proud graduate of St. Vincent's Catholic High School in Newport News, Class of 1960. Pat was vice president and construction superintendent with Beamer Construction in Newport News and James City County for 41 years, with longtime friend Lawrence Beamer. He was very instrumental in developing and building Powhatan Secondary in Williamsburg, literally and also through his dedicated service to the community.
A devoted son, brother, and husband, Pat was a faithful member of the Knights of Columbus, 4th degree; served in the U.S. Army Reserves; and was also a member of the Rotary Club and Elks. A long time member of St. Jerome Catholic Church in Newport News, he was instrumental in building the rectory, office, and Faith and Life building for that parish. He also served on the Parish Council and Finance Committee there.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert J. Malarkey Sr.; and brother, Robert Jr.
He is survived by his mother, Cecelia Charnock Malarkey of Williamsburg; his wife of 42 years, Madeline; his daughters, Mary Griffith (Gene) and Anne Carr; and sons, Patrick Jr., Michael (Andrea), and Robert (Marisa); and his eight grandchildren, Eric, Sydney, Thomas, Landon, Analise, Lauren, Siena, and Christian. Other survivors include his sisters, Cecilia Rudy-Martin and Lisa Craig; brothers, Joseph, John, and Daniel; and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, April 26, 2010, at Weymouth Funeral Home, 12746 Nettles Drive, Newport News, VA, (757) 930-2222. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 27, 2010, at St. Bede Catholic Church in Williamsburg (on Ironbound Rd.) by the Rev. John A. Abe, with a reception immediately following at the church. Private interment will occur at a later date.

'Uncle Pat'...only now can you fully understand the extents to which you've impacted each one of our lives. Words can not begin to express how much you've meant to me. I am so very thankful for all the time we shared together; for the many conversations; for your advice; your example; your humor; your love; and for the many times that you put your faith in me and your support behind me. Only now can you possibly know how much it all meant to me. I have been blessed to have you in my life and I am a better man for all that I have learned from you. As painful as it is for us now; our prayers have been answered. Your pain is gone; your illness is behind you; and you are in the presence of great company. I will never forget you and all you have done for our entire family. We love you and will miss you terribly.

Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there I do not sleep.I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the mornings hush I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry; I am not there. I did not die. Mary E. frye

In loving memory of my uncle/godfather who was the backbone of our family. Thank you for all that you are and have done to keep the family what we are today. May you find peace and comfort with all of the loved ones who've made it to heaven before you. I know they were there with open arms to greet you. You will be dearly missed and family gatherings just won't be the same without you but we will hold onto our memories and smile when we think of you. All our love forever, your niece,
