Peter CARDOZO Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - Peter Stirling Cardozo died on Jan. 17, at the age of 95 at his home in Williamsburg, Va.
He was the beloved husband of Susan Strong Cardozo; loving father of Peter Jr. (Nancy), Pamela, Christopher (Pamela) and Jonathan (Karen); loving grandfather of Scott (Lisa) Cardozo, Barbara (Brian) Surdyk, Christopher Cardozo Jr., Zipporah and Adam Cardozo; and loving great-grandfather of Katherine Cardozo and Karoline and Lauren Surdyk, and Christopher Austin McKenzie.
His first wife, Barbara, and Jonathan's wife, Karen, mother of Zippy and Adam, and grandson, Christopher Jr., are smiling at us from Heaven.
He liked words and won the two Best Writing prizes while in the Class of 1939 at Dartmouth College. He created The Writing Clinic and taught the writing of words for the first two years after he graduated as a Junior Instructor in Dartmouth's English Department. He wrote novelettes and short stories, a couple of dozen of them, that were published in magazines like Cosmopolitan and Redbook. He wrote words for a monthly article, The Children's World in Good Housekeeping. He wrote words for The March Of Time (Movie), as Motion Picture and Theater Editor of LIFE Magazine and wrote them in World War II training films as a Lt. Jg. in the United States Navy. He wrote words for The Eddie Cantor Story in Hollywood and taught them in a Writing Motion Pictures class at UCLA. Back in New York he polished words as Story Editor of TV's Studio One, was TV Creative Director for Fuller & Smith & Ross and as Creative Director for Bruns Advertising where his words helped bring Hasbro's G.I. Joe to life. He used his words for 16 years as Director of Premium Marketing at Bantam Books. He used his words writing books that Bantam published. A Wonderful World of Children was one of Bantam Books' early one-million- copy-sellers. The Whole Kids Catalog, The Second Whole Kids Catalog and The 3rd Whole Kids Catalog sold over a half million copies.
For the past 22 years he wrote and edited THIRTY-NINE OUT, a two-time award winning newsletter, for his Class at Dartmouth. His Classmates told him that his slick-paper, two column, photograph-laden newsletter was the glue that held their Class together.
Yes, he liked words and wrote them well, even his own obituary.
PS: He liked to sail the New England waters, he liked to travel and most of all he liked to be with and loved his family.
In lieu of flowers, his wife, Susan suggests that you plant something in your garden to honor Peter's memory and the love they had for one another.
A service will be held at the Williamsburg Unitarian Universalist Church, 3051 Ironbound Rd., on Saturday, Jan. 21, at 3 p.m. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

We are very saddened to hear of Peters leaving us. He was such a vibrant person, always thinking ahead, wonderful sense of humor and a pleasure to be with. He was a very early member of the Virginia Symphony Society of Greater Williamsburg. His energy, council and friendship will be missed.
