Pinkey STEPHENSON Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - Pinkey Elizabeth McCoy Stephenson was granted her angel wings on Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010.
Pinkey was born on Aug. 31, 1924, the daughter of the late Virginia McCoy Harris (aka Cordelia Lee Watson) and the late Daniel McCoy Sr., of Williamsburg, Va.
After graduating from high school, she moved to Wilkes Barre, Pa. In 1940, she was united with the love of her life, Hurbert H. Stephenson. After the death of her husband, she decided to remain in Wilkes Barre to care for her mother-in-law, Helen Stephenson. In 1978, Pinkey met her lifetime partner, Francis Sherman, who passed away in June of 1993.
In 1987, she retired as a Seamstress from Leslie Faye Garment Company, after many years of service. Pinkey enjoyed spending time with her friends and the families of Gladys Miller, Priscilla Rux, her neighbors, her goddaughter/niece, Cleo Bostic, and her nieces, Frances Bostic and Valerie Smith. She was also committed to performing community services, working with various charities and organizations: The Elks Club, Prince Hall Freemason and the Order of Eastern Stars. In addition to Pinkey's active lifestyle, she was a dedicated worshiper of Bethel AME Church, where she was a very active and supportive member.
Her interests included her family, gardening, reading, entertaining and traveling. She devoted much of her time and energy as a caregiver to her family members and friends. Pinkey enjoyed music so much and she loved to rock, swing dance and sing. Her final days were spent surrounded by her family and friends. She had touched their lives in some way, thought-out her very memorable life.
Pinkey's life would seem too short to many, but those who were touched by her understood, that the quality of existence far exceeds the quality of time, in which one lives. Her gentle smile, her witty sense of humor, her petite fingers and baby soft–skin, brought so much joy to anyone blessed to be in her presence. Although, she was not ready to let go, she left with us an unforgettable legacy of courage and hope and reminded all of how precious life can be.
She was also preceded in death by her sister, Mary "Pick" Shackleford; and her brother, John Daniel "Sonny" McCoy Jr.
Pinkey leaves to cherish her blessed memories, her sister, Beatrice Wright; her goddaughter/niece, Cleola Bostic; her nieces, Frances Bostic and Valerie Smith (John); and a host of other nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and many caring friends.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010, in Whiting's Chapel with the Rev. Clarence Bolton officiating. Interment will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery. Family and friends will assemble at 406 Harriet Tubman Drive by noon Saturday. Mrs. Stephenson may be viewed in the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday. The family will receive friends in Union Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, 108 Alice Street, Williamsburg.
Professional service entrusted to the staff of Whiting's Funeral Home 7005 Pocahontas Trail, Williamsburg, 757-229-3011. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.
