R. BOWSER Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - On Jan. 3, 2012, R. Max Bowser passed on to that big stock market in the sky. A longtime, "hail fellow well met" of Newport News, he was born in Celina, Ohio, on Oct. 16, 1916.
Over nine and a half decades, he filled his cup of life with a charming and positive attitude, seldom having a negative word about anyone or anything short the occasional grumble at Democrats. After working for newspapers, a career in the Air Force spanning WWII, Korea, and Vietnam and retiring as a Lt. Col., he attended Thomas Nelson College, received a degree in finance, and started The Bowser Report, an industry-respected stock market newsletter focused on microcap stock analysis, and on which he still rode the publisher's desk until three weeks before his quiet departure.
A devoted fan of the Redskins, he played a mean game of tennis into his 80s, often whipping players half his age, and continued to exercise three times a week at Riverside Wellness & Fitness Center to an end that had few fumbles worth recording. He loved to tell jokes that often fell flat, but people laughed at regardless, was generous, lived modestly and with prudence, and he enjoyed being liked by the people he met every day and was successful at it. He attended St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Hampton.
His originality and cheerful personality will be missed by his daughter, Cindy Bowser; and son-in-law, Dave; his cousins, Michelle Fuerst and Connie Zullinger, both of Ohio; and his many friends in Newport News and throughout the country.
Services will be private. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Ten years later, I think of Max as still being here! I know he has been telling jokes on the other side for a long time now. One thing I remember fondly is the visits he had with my mother, bringing ice cream and wine for an afternoon of conversation. There will never be another Max Bowser!

Cindy,
My condolences to you on the passing of your father. Although I never met him personally, I really enjoyed what he wrote in the newsletter; his humor reminded me of my grandfather, who passed away a few years ago, also at 95.

Max inspired me, cheered me, and always made me remember the most important things in life - working hard, loving your friends, and having fun in everything you do. I will miss you Max - you taught me a lot. Cindy - you are in my thoughts every day.

Please accept my heartfelt sympathies and condolences over your loss. I learned a lot and made lifelong friends while working for Mr. Bowser. I always got a kick out of his ideas for the December issues of the Report. ~ Scottie

I first met Max at the Riverside Wellness & Fitness Center when he was turning 90 and I was turning 50. I suggested to him that anyone who was celebrating their 90th birthday deserved to be taken to lunch - and so the friendship started together with our annual lunch date. Max was a person who did not have a negative bone in his body - a real mentor to anyone on how to live each day of your life. Max was in his 90's but he never grew old. He possessed the gift of "quick whit" and always held his own in any joking volley. I'll miss my friend.
