Raymond Mooney Obituary

HAMPTON - SMSGT E8, Raymond Cecil Mooney, retired U.S. Air Force with 20 years of service, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009, from Alzheimer's Disease. Ray was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
A recipient of the Meritorious Service Award and the Air Force Commendation Medal, Ray also retired as a District Manager of Leaseway Transportation in Phoenix, Ariz., after 12 years of service.
Ray was of the Baptist faith and accepted Jesus Christ as his savior when he was a young man. He was a native of Shelby, N.C., and a resident of Phoenix, Ariz., for 31 years before returning to Hampton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Champ L. and Wilma C. Mooney; a son, Richard L. Mooney; a sister, Elizabeth M. Davis; a brother-in-law, Jerry Weaver; and a nephew, Mike Wall.
Left to cherish his precious memory is his wife, of 36 years, Carolyn Sams Mooney; his son, Raymond L. Mooney of Pensacola, Fla.; his stepson, Ronald Sams (Debbie) of Hampton; stepdaughters, Sherri F. Roper (Paul) of Alabaster, Ala., and Juanita S. Lilley (John) of Newport News; two sisters, Kathryn M. Wall (Glenn) of Shelby, N.C., and Arline Weaver of Woodruff, S.C.; three grandchildren, Sarah, Michael and Katie Mooney; five stepgrandchildren, Jason French, Missy S. Jordan, Christina Sams, and Amber and Jessica Lilley; five step-great-grandchildren, Lilian, Gregory and Shaw French, Noah Jordan and Mary Williams; and his nieces and nephews, Pam Fish , Sherrie Clark, Andrew Wall and Mark Davis all of Shelby, N.C., and Thomas and Timmy Weaver of Woodruff, S.C.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, at Berceuse Funeral and Cremation Traditions, 2609 Cunningham Drive, Hampton. Inurnment with full military honors will be held in the Remembrance Garden at Peninsula Memorial Park at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, with Pastor Cliff Jordan officiating.
