Raymond OLIVER Obituary

STERLING - Raymond Eugene Oliver Jr., age 57, of Sterling, Va., passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2010. He had bravely battled bone cancer (osteosarcoma) for five years.
Ray is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Susan Lord Oliver; and his children, Karen Oliver of Ashburn, Va., and Jason Oliver and his wife, Meggan of Penticton, British Columbia. He is also survived by his parents, Raymond and Frances Oliver of Newport News, Va., his brother, Bill Oliver; and his sister, Cynthia Oliver Butler. Additionally, he leaves behind many other dear relatives and friends.
Ray was born on May 22, 1953, in Alleghany County, Va. He graduated from Warwick High School in 1971, Lynchburg College in 1975 with a BS in Economics, and did graduate work at Georgetown University in International Economics. Professionally, he worked at many consulting firms in the D.C. area, primarily in the Human Resources field. He believed strongly in volunteerism, and used his financial expertise to serve in many capacities.
He was a 30-year member of Sterling United Methodist Church, where he served as treasurer for many years. He was a founding board member and treasurer of the Teri and Shari Malone Foundation (honoring talented 8th grade students in Loudoun County). He volunteered with the county extension service, giving financial advice. He particularly enjoyed the "Reality Store" program, helping high school seniors understand the budgeting process. He also served as an Election Precinct Chief for the state of Virginia and on many other church and neighborhood committees through the years.
A celebration of life service will be held at Sterling United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, 2010. A luncheon with time for remembrance will immediately follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Teri and Shari Malone Foundation at P.O. Box 3164, Leesburg, VA 20177; or the American Cancer Society. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

You'll be sorely missed, Ray. Thank you for your many years of dedicated service, of conversation and counsel, and of friendship. With God's grace, I'll see you someday (maybe they'll have smoothies!).

Ray was one of my best friends in high school - remember spending many afternoons riding around in his yellow VW convertible. We remained in touch as he battled over the last five years. He was an example of courage and hope....We will miss him!
