Richard Davis Obituary

HAMPTON - Richard Davis Jr., 80, was called into the Masters arms on Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at the James River Convalescent Center in Newport News.
He was born in Keller, Va., to the late Richard Davis Sr. and Helen Matthews. He was formerly of Port Norris and Vineland, N.J., until moving back to Virginia with his daughter.
He retired from Venice Maid Company in Vineland, N.J., and served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Richard attended Shiloh Baptist Church in Port Norris, N.J., until he was no longer able to attend.
He was predeceased by Elizabeth Johnson, Ruth Johnson-Archer, Richard Davis III, Martin Johnson, Damione Johnson and 19 siblings.
He is survived by spouse, Joyce Davis of Vineland, N.J.; son, Maurice Johnson of Duluth, Ga.; his daughters, Cecelia Johnson of Clifton, N.J., and Zina Ashley (Odell Sr.) of Hampton, Va.; grandchildren, Anice Johnson, Cortnei West, Daniel Haulsey, Maurice Johnson II, all of New Jersey, Shala' (Andre') of Georgia, Odell Ashley Jr., Najee Ashley, both of Hampton, Va.; brother, Gerald Davis of Virginia; sister, Elizabeth Davis of Delaware; five great-grandchildren and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
Service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at Bethel AME Church, 94 W. Lincoln Street, Hampton VA 23669, with the Reverend Andre P. Jefferson Sr. officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Newport News, Va. Family and friends will assemble at 13 Sandy Lake Drive, Hampton, by 10 a.m. Saturday. Viewing will be Friday, Nov. 20, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home and two hours prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
The family would like to thank the staff at the James River Convalescent Center and the Sentara Careplex ICU 3rd and 4th floor for all of their care.
