Robert E. SOWERS

COLONIAL HEIGHTS - Robert "Bob" Sowers, departed this life Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, following a brief illness in Petersburg, Va.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 33 years, Mrs. Gertrude E. Sowers in 1976; and is survived by two sons, Robin C. Sowers and his wife, Patty of Matoaka, Va., and the Rev. Ronald E. Sowers and his wife, Becky of Dinwiddie, Va.; three grandchildren, Mrs. Kristina Beeson and husband, Brad, Mark E. Sowers and wife, Heather, all of Williamsburg, Va., and Andrea Sowers of Mocksville, N.C.; four great-grandchildren, Emily and Makayla Beeson, Zane and Trevor Sowers, all of Williamsburg; two nieces, Mrs. Beverly Brady, and Mrs. Betty Jane Cawunder, both of Baltimore, Md.
Mr. Sowers graduated from Lebannon High School in 1935, after which he was employed as a Tool & Die Maker with the Glenn L. Martin Co., in Baltimore, Md., through the spring of 1943, when he was inducted into the U.S. Army, fulfilling his wartime service in the "ACER" program at NACA, Langley until the end of WW II. He retired from NASA Langley in 1972.
Mr. Sowers was a member of Zion United Methodist Church in Seaford, Va., where he sat on various committees, Methodist Men; and the Adult Bible Class. He was a 50 plus year member of the St. Tammany Lodge #5 in Hampton, Va., and a longtime member of the Yorktown Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star.
A Christian funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 21, 2009, in the chapel of Amory Funeral Home, Grafton, with the Rev. John Haynes, Officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be private.
