Robert BLACK Obituary

TABB - Robert Henry Black passed peacefully on Friday, April 23, 2010, surrounded by his family.
He was born on Feb. 18, 1919, in Warwick County, Newport News, Va., to the late John Henry and Sarah Robinson Black. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Deaconess Anna Rebecca Black; his son, Clarence Thomas Black; and several siblings.
He was a faithful member of Zion Prospect Baptist Church for many years. At Zion Prospect, Robert was a devoted member of the Deacon Board, Zion Prospect Prayer Band, Sunday school, Men's Ministry and one of the original members of the Men of Faith Male Chorus. He had a great passion for the United Christian Brotherhood and looked forward to attending their yearly retreat and other functions, until his health no longer allowed him to participate. He had a great love for the Lord and understood his dedication to good works.
Deacon Black was an employee of Yoder Dairy for several years. He was later employed with The City of Newport News, working with street repair and retired after 37 years of service.
He is survived by his children, Robert L. Black of Newport News, James L. Black of Gloucester, and Lois A. Johnson of Yorktown; his two sisters, Mary Dillard of Yorktown and Lucille Harvey of Newport News; five grandchildren, Beverly Woltz (Joseph), Baron Lamont Scott (Melanie), Shinell L. Black, Lisa D. Black, and Karen D. Black; one sister-in-law, Louise Howard (Snook) of Texas; many nieces, nephews, and one very special adopted daughter, Emma Chisman.
His family will receive friends at Zion Prospect Baptist Church, Tabb, Va., from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 27, at the funeral chapel. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 28, 2010. Pastor Walter Johnson will officiate. Burial will follow services in the church cemetery.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

Lois and Shinell and the rest of the family, I know that you all will miss your father and grandfather. Again, I am so tremendously grateful for the time that he took to take my grandmother to and from dialysis those many years. Three times a week he picked her up in the early hours of the morning without fail and without complaint. You all will continue to be in my prayers.

To the Black Family: I was sad to hear of the passing of Dea. Black. He loved God and faithfully served the Lord for many, many years and was a strong witness in the community. I even remember him at prayer meetings at the Lighthouse so many years ago. His life touched the lives of many. He will surely be missed.
God bless you all and may He continue to strengthen you as a family.
