Robert H. JONES Jr.

WILLIAMSBURG - Robert Henley 'Bobby' Jones Jr., 81, of Williamsburg, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2010, at MCV Hospital in Richmond, Va.
Bobby was a lifelong resident of Williamsburg. He was a well-known mechanic and worked for Steele's Garage for more than 40 years. He also worked for his father, Robert H. Jones as a commercial fisherman with R.H. Jones and Son, Seafood back in the late 40's and into the early 60's. After retirement from Steeles's he worked with his son and grandsons at Tidewater Asphalt Curb until 2008.
He was affiliated with the American Power Boat Association for many years. He built and raced his own boats and was very successful both as a driver and as a referee. He traveled all over the country and was well-known in boat racing circles for his boat "Soakin' Wet". He also built race cars for the late Frank Hughes of Williamsburg. He then ventured into go-cart racing and built James City Speedway, a track he owned and operated.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 49 years, Gladys Nixon Jones; and his parents, Robert Henley Jones and Clara New Jones, all of Williamsburg.
He is survived by his son, Robert Henley Jones III and his wife, Benita M. Jones also of Williamsburg. He was the loving grandfather of six grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
The family expresses sincere thanks to family and friends and the doctors and nurses at MCV hospital for their caring support.
Family and friends will assemble at 7 p.m. Friday, June 4, at Bucktrout Funeral Home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 5, at the funeral home.
