Robert REDFERN Obituary

VIRGINIA BEACH - Robert (Bobby) H. Redfern Jr., 73, died Oct. 20, 2010, at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital, Virginia Beach.
Born Jan. 25, 1937, in Wilmington, N.C., he was the son of Robert H. Redfern Sr. and Marie Harrelson Redfern.
He is survived by his loving wife, Betty Davis Redfern, who he was married to for 32 years; his daughter, Leslie Redfern Smith and her husband, Robert of Charlotte, N.C.; and stepson, Daniel James Wilson Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va. Also surviving are his brother, Victor Edgar "Ed" Redfern and wife, Pat, of Lake Jackson, Texas; and sister, Kathryn Ripley and husband, James of Fredericksburg, Va.; four grandchildren, Jeffrey Garland Smith, Daniel John Wilson, Kyle Wilson, Darby Wilson; and one great-granddaughter, Kaya Wilson.
He was predeceased by his sister, Martha "Nell" Robertson of Irving, Texas.
Bobby graduated from Norview High School in 1955 and attended Old Dominion University and Christopher Newport College. He retired from Newport News Shipbuilding after 37 years of service as a Nuclear Design Engineer.
Bobby was a member of Bayside Baptist Church and previously a member of Lynnhaven Colony UCC Congregational Church. His philanthropy to this church included a variety of activities associated with the Child Development Center. He had a lifetime love of all sports, but in particular basketball and was a member of the ODU Big Blue Men's Basketball. His other hobbies included boating and fishing. Bobby had a love for running, and in healthier days participated in both state and local marathons.
Much appreciation is extended to our extended family of Adrian "Porky" and Betty Willis, Rick and Connie Kumer, and Joe and Clare O'Brien for their love and support during Bobby's illness and passing.
Additionally, a special thanks to all the nursing staff and Palliative Care Team at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital, especially to his nurse Felicia.

Dear Betty,

Please accept my sincerest condolences, and my apology for being so late in writing a note to you. I was in China and did not learn of Bobby's passing until I returned.

You were clearly the light of his life and he was blessed to have you with him so many years. You have many precious memories of your time together...those memories will become sweeter and more cherished as time goes by.

I remember when we were in the 5th grade, he spent his lunch money on packages of Kool-Aid so we could all lick our finger, dip in the package and have red and purple teeth and lips (and fingers). hahaha It was fun. I remember him most as being quiet and shy but shall remember him most as being a thoroughly good person.

Dear Leslie, We hope it is not too late for you to receive this note, but we wanted you to know how very sorry we were to learn of your Father's death. Please know that you have been in our thoughts and prayers during these days of sadness.
We were reminded of another sad time in your life many years ago when you were just a teenager and so near to our hearts. We have often wondered how you were and what paths you had taken in life. How happy we were to learn that you are married and have a son. We pray that all is well for you and your family, and may God bless and keep you close to His heart.
Our love and prayers,

The Starboards--Kiddy & James

Betty, I'm so sorry about Bobby. I remember him from Norview (I was in class of '56). I recently went to the Platinum Pilots lunch (my first) and I intend to continue, and I remember you talking about Bobby's problems. I know you will miss him, but take comfort in the fact that he's now at peace and without pain. Again, my sincere sympathies to you. Take care, Carol Maccubbin Williams

Betty, Leslie, Daniel, and all of the family, my Deepest Sympathy on the passing of Bob. I was just recently talking to him about the shipyard at Newport News, the different ships and today he has gone on. There are many wonderful memories of his days at the shipyard and how he trained and supervised many young designers to mature and move on up through the ranks. We all are so appreciative because he left a landmark of dedication. May his memories live on with each of you and be a comfort to you in times of need. -Flo

Warm Summer Sun

Warm summer sun,
Shine kindly here,
Warm southern wind,
Blow softly here.
Green sod above,
Lie light, lie light.
Good night, dear heart,
Good night, good night.
