Robert PETTAWAY Obituary
He was born April 6, 1941, in Edgecombe County, N.C., to the late Robert Pettaway and Mary Louise Pettaway. He was a 1959 graduate of George Washington Carver H.S., shortly thereafter, he went to work for Newport News Shipbuilding & DryDock, where he was employed over 40 years. His last job assignment before retiring was in 053. Deacon Pettaway was a devoted member of Park Place Baptist Church, where he served as the Sunday School Superintendent, Usher, Willing Workers, Men's Choir and Gospel Choir.
Deacon Pettaway was preceded in death by his daughter, Bonita Tony; and his brother, James Allen Pettaway.
Deacon Pettaway leaves to cherish his memory his devoted and loving wife, Barbara Ann Pettaway; children, Alesia Hines (William), Ramona Moore (Milton) of Kileen, Texas, Robert M. Pettaway (Vanessa); stepchildren, Herbert Bland of Kileen, Barry Bland of Washington, D.C., and Vivian Palmer (Eric); three brothers, Pastor Jessie L. Pettaway (Lettie), Johnny Pettaway (Dorothy), and Vernon Pettaway (Deloris); three sisters, Bessie Marks, Eula Wilson, and Wanda Jeter (Earnest); two sisters-in-law, Earline Pettaway and Vivian Hockaday; 20 grandchildren; 12 great- grands; and a host of nephews, nieces and friends.
Deacon Pettaway never met a stranger. He loved the Lord and exhibited Christian characteristics by showing love, joy, peace, gentleness, goodness, meekness and faith. He will be missed unmeasurably by all who knew and loved him.
A viewing will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today, Sept. 12, 2010, at the funeral home. A homegoing celebration will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 13, 2010, at Nickelson-Cummings Funeral Chapel, Hampton, Va. Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens. Dear Wanda, Eula, Cookie and family, I was so sorry to hear about Junebug. I mourn your loss with you. I am so sorry for your hurt and pain. He lived a wonderful life with children and baby grands. he was in the love of our Lord and that is all we can ask. Junebug knew his Heavenly Father. So we know that God was pleased with his servant.
