WILLIAMSBURG - On Saturday, January 5, 2013, our beloved Royal F. "Sonny" Carter, Jr., answered the Master's call in his home, surrounded by his loving family. His life began on November 9, 1941, the son of the late Lottie and Royal Carter, Sr. He was a lifelong resident of the area and an avid "Redskins Fan." Royal retired from the Newport News Ship Building & Dry Dock, after forty years of dedicated service. He was loved by all and he will be greatly missed. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Vivian Carter and a grandson, Christopher Johnson. He leaves to treasure his blessed memories, his devoted wife of fifty-two years, Maggie O. Carter; his daughters, Carolette Carter, Sharon Watkins and Annette Carter; his sons, Calvin Carter (Terri) and Carl Dana Carter; his granddaughter whom he raised, Catrina Swinton; his sisters, Sylethia Hawkins, Helen Richeson (Carlyle) and Ada White; his brothers, Ernest Wright (Doris) and William Carter (Joan); his other grandchildren, Ashley, Alecia, Vaughn, Ieisha, and Danielle.; a host of great-grandchildren; his nieces and nephews; and many other loving relatives and many caring friends. A celebration of his life will be held 12:00 noon on Monday, January 14, 2013, in Shiloh Baptist Church, Yorktown, with the Rev. Barbara Lemon and the Rev. Sherman Grant officiating. Entombment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens. Family and friends will assemble at101 Giles Lane by 11:15 a.m. on Monday. Mr. Carter may be viewed in the funeral home from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 on Sunday.
