Ruby FLAUGHER Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - Ruby Glenn Flaugher, 83, of Ford's Colony in Williamsburg, passed away following a brief illness on Sunday, Sept. 12, in Greenville, S.C.
Ruby was the daughter of Alma and Julian Glenn, born on Nov. 13, 1927, in Newport News, Va. A 1945 graduate of Newport News High School, Ruby initially worked for U.S. Army Intelligence at Fort Eustis, where she met a handsome young army officer, Tom Flaugher. They were married in December of that year. During Tom's army career, they were stationed throughout the country and the world, including Saipan, England, California, Massachusetts, Texas, and Washington state. For 20 years, Ruby embraced the joys and challenges of being an army wife, including the travel associated with their many moves, saying "you're as happy as you want to be", advice she often shared with her children.
Though she enjoyed living in many different places, Ruby was thrilled to return to her much-loved Virginia when Tom retired from the Army in 1963. After they moved to Williamsburg, she shared her love and knowledge of history with the public by working as a tour guide and then an interpreter for Colonial Williamsburg for 17 years. Ruby was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was active in many civic organizations, serving as a past-president of the Republican Women's Club and garden clubs in the Williamsburg area. She was a long-time member of Williamsburg Baptist church as well as an avid bridge player, a golfer, and a lover of poodles. Ruby and Tom had celebrated 54 years of marriage before his death in 2000.
Ruby is survived by her daughter, Ann Flaugher of Chicago; daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Warren Cook of Greenville, S.C.; son and daughter-in-law, John and Lynne Flaugher of Naperville, Ill.; and cousin, Howard Glenn of Williamsburg; as well as five grandchildren, one great-grandson and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Major (ret.) Thomas Earl Flaugher; infant son, Tommy Flaugher; brother, Clarence (CE) Glenn; and sister, Gladys Barbour.
The Rev. Jim Johnson will lead a memorial service at Williamsburg Baptist church on Saturday morning, Oct. 2. at 11 am. Friends are invited to attend the service as well as a reception at the church following the service.
Memorial donations may be sent to the American Cancer Society. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Ruby and I shared much in common, although there is more than 20 years difference in our age. I first met Ruby at a RWC Meeting and we were friends instantly. I had no idea she was sick. My sincere condolences to the family!
