NEWPORT NEWS - A very dear husband, father, grandfather, and brother affectionately known as R. L. died Wednesday, May 8, in The Baptist Hospital of Miami Florida. R. L. was born in Wilmington, North Carolina on December 1, 1938 to the late Edna and Rufus Linwood Croom, Sr. Before he was two years old the family moved to the tidewater area. After high school in Hampton, R. L. enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Intrepid. He was employed at the Newport News shipyard for forty years in the sheet metal and production engineering departments. R. L. was a member of Hilton Christian Church where he served as a deacon, elder, and chairman of several committees throughout his many years at the church. He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Parthena Cecil Croom; son, Bradley Croom; daughter, Helen Beth Croom; grandchildren, Adrian, Silas, Charles, and Emie Lou; brother, Bill Croom; sister, Faye Timberlake; and several nieces and nephews. R. L. will always be remembered by his family with his belief that almost anything is possible with the right attitude. The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 16, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Peninsula Funeral Home. Interment will be 12:00 p.m., Friday, May 17, at Parklawn Memorial Park. The memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m. with The Reverend Doctor Terrye A. Williams officiating, at Hilton Christian Church, 100 James River Drive, Newport News, 23601.
