Ruth Gills Obituary
Ruth was born Oct. 5, 1921, in Franklin County, Va., and has been a resident of Newport News for the past 64 years.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Alvin M. Gills Sr.; her dear son, Alvin M Gills Jr.; her parents, William H and Eva E Parcell Sr.; and brother, William H Parcell Jr.
Ruth is survived by two daughters, Billie G Deese and husband, Doug of Hampton, Kitty G Eib and husband, David of Indiana; a son, Dabney H Gills and wife, Jackie of Poquoson; along with eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Julia P Kelly of Roanoke; a brother, Robert Parcell and wife, Lillian of Franklin County; and a sister-in-law, Anne P Parcell also of Franklin County; along with many other family and friends.
Ruth enjoyed spending her later years in life working happily in her yard and gardening, when she was not watching her beloved Atlanta Braves. She also enjoyed attending her grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's sporting events.
The family requests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
A graveside service will be held at Peninsula Memorial Park on Oct. 30, 2009, at 11:30 a.m.

So sorry to hear about Ms Ruth. I knew her through my mom Anna Cuppett and her days at Ottos. She was a very sweet lady and friend to my mom.

Mary and I offer our condolences to the family of Mrs. Gills. I have very fond memories of her especially her lavish holiday dinners. She was a survivor and managed to live by herself until her passing. She was spirited, opinionated and gutsy. All who knew her will miss her and the world is a little less lively today. Billie, thanks for all you did for her over the years.
