HAMPTON - In the end, Ruth Whitaker Hopson quietly and with no complaint left us to meet her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, July 9, 2013. It would be almost nine years after the passing of her husband, Claude of more than forty-four years. Ruth was born on November 18, 1938, to the late Bertie Mae and Samuel Whitaker in Como, North Carolina. She was the third of nine children born to this union. She was predeceased by four brothers: Charles W. Whitaker, Phillip Whitaker, Quinton H. Whitaker, and Earl H. Whitaker. After graduating from C. S. Brown High School in Winton, North Carolina, Ruth attended Dixie Hospital School of Nursing in Hampton, Virginia. Following her nursing career, she attended Hampton Institute (University) and received her Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics Education and her Master's Degree from the College of William and Mary. Ruth was a dedicated teacher of mathematics at Hampton High School for forty-one years and served as Mathematics Department Chairman for a short time. On June 25, 1960, Ruth married the love of her life, Claude Maurice Hopson. While there were no children born to this union, she and Claude displayed a major role in the lives of two of their nieces, Tammy and Alana Whitaker, who many thought were their daughters. Ruth was an active member of First Baptist Church East End for over fifty-five years. She was Vice President of the League of Christian Women and a member and past president of the Nurses Ministry. She was a Silver Star and lifetime member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Lambda Omega Chapter-Newport News, Virginia. Ruth was a former member of the Ruth Chapter #3 Order of the Eastern Star, Newport News, Virginia. Ruth enjoyed traveling and serving at the local, state, and national levels in various educational organizations. She also served as secretary-treasurer for the Hampton Institute Pirates Bowling League and was active in the Hampton Roads Bowling Association. Among her many talents, Ruth enjoyed being an avid rose gardener, excellent cook, and expert seamstress. Ruth leaves to mourn her memory, three sisters: Reba P. Whitaker, Suitland, Maryland; Jennifer W. Simmons (Lonnie), Murfreesboro, North Carolina; and Theresa W. Picot (Joe), Oxon Hill, Maryland; one brother: Lyman W. Whitaker (Vivian), Newport News, Virginia; two sisters-in-law: Sallie Whitaker, Baltimore, Maryland; Julia Whitaker, Cofield, North Carolina; and a host of other relatives and friends. Viewing will be held on Monday July 15, 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Ronald C. Perkins Funeral Home, followed by an Ivy Beyond The Wall ceremony. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 16, at First Baptist Church East End, 3000 Jefferson Ave., Newport News. Interment will follow at Hampton Memorial Gardens.
