Samuel POWERS Obituary

HAYES - Samuel Paul Powers, of Hayes, passed away Saturday, April 17, 2010, at his residence surrounded by family.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 64 years, Virginia; daughters, Nancy (Carter) Richardson, Tricia (Doug) Weatherford, and Garet Powers; sons, S. Paul (Leslie) Powers and Gary Powers; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Patricia Brown; and three nephews.
Sam was born on Sept. 3, 1923. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Sam was a former member of the Masonic Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons.
Sam served in the U.S. Marine Corps, throughout World War II (1941-1945), reaching the rank of sergeant. Sgt. Powers was stationed for over two years in the South Pacific region, from Pago Pago, Tukwila, American Samoa, Hilo, Hawaii, to Guam. Sam, fighting with the Fifth Joint Assault Signal Company, Fifth Marine Division, landed in the first wave to confront the Japanese on Iwo Jima and was involved in the battle until the island was secured. His company received the Presidential Unit Citation. Sam was awarded the Purple Heart Medal for wounds suffered during the battle.
He was employed as Executive Vice President of Associated Mortgage Company in Hampton, with branch offices in Richmond, Norfolk, and Waynesboro. More recently, he served as Executive Vice President of Advance Mortgage Corporation, a subsidiary of Citi Bank. He managed operations in Seattle, Denver, Salt Lake City, Atlanta, Tampa, Orlando, Sarasota, Miami, and New Orleans.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 26, 2010, at the First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dr. Douglas Nagel officiating. Interment will be at Quantico National Cemetery at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the Building Fund of First Presbyterian Church; or to Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue.
